124182 2003-02-26 09:53:00 Hi.

Pentium 4 1600. When using MS Works 4, print or preview to HP 5L Lazerjet, error box pops up "out of memory", set default to PSC750 printer no problem, PSC750 is USB, Lazerjet is Parallel

124183 2003-02-26 10:27:00 what OS? how mach ram? and how much hardrive space do you have free?

it could be a resource problem but that depends on OS a bit.

124185 2003-02-27 23:57:00 If you want to use the parallel port, check that it is set for the correct mode in the BIOS (probably ECP). Graham L (2)

124187 2003-03-05 08:15:00 Look at your settings for the Laserjet.

Under properties, on one of the tabs there will be an option to "print directly to the printer"

If that is selected, then out of memory could occur, as its normally spooled to a print file on the PC and fed to the Laserjet as it can handle it

Select an option to spool it instead.

Printers have little in the way of memory, relying on PC spooling.

124188 2003-03-05 09:11:00 Does the out of memory error dialog pertain to the HPL5 ? Basically the 5l is useless under XP. The only driver available for it is a PCL one, and the printer has only 1MB (as standard) memory. It doesn't take a very complex page to exceed the printer's memory, and hence the error. Earlier O/Ss could use the 'host driver' where the PC rasterised the print job, and then compress the image before sending it to the printer. So the printer could handle very complex pages with little memory.

Either you need to get a memory expansion (prohibitive - JEIDA card), or try setting your print quality to 300dpi.
