124015 2003-02-26 04:28:00 Hello folks...

I have just created a Norton Ghost image of my hard drive, onto a CD. It seems to have made the CD perfectly, but I cannot understand the following Ghost instruction:

"To start using the backup CD, use DOS, and run an integrity check on the image (to check that the image is 100%).

How do I use the back up Ghost image CD in DOS? Do I restart (Windows 98) in DOS mode? Then what? I am no expert in DOS commands, so do I need to enter a specific command to access the CD drive, or??

Thanks for your assistance.

By the way, I have successfully manage to reformat the HD and reinstall the drivers. It took a 45 min phone call to Dell support desk - located in Bangalore India of all places - at Dell's expense. The tech help man was very patient. I had to remove some drivers and reinstall, rebooting about 4 times.

Cheers, Steve_L

Forgot to include this instruction from Ghost:
"If you cannot start Windows, then you must use Ghost.exe to restore your hard disk or partition."

So, I assume that if Windows gets corrupted so bad that it will not start at all, I must use Ghost.exe - but is Ghost.exe located on the back up image CD that I just made, and will it be accessed automatically? I did try rebooting with the Ghosted image CD in place, but it was not activated and instead Win98 started as usual.

And yes, I have read the Help pages included in Ghost, but cannot make sense of them on these matters.

Thanks. - Steve_L

124017 2003-02-26 04:40:00 To verify your image on the CD, all you need to do is firstly, make sure your PC is set to boot from a CD. Then, place your first CD into the drive and then re-start your PC. The computer will start up in DOS automatically and will launch the DOS version of Ghost.

The following has been summarised from the manual ...

1. On the Ghost main menu click LOCAL > CHECK > IMAGE FILE.
2. In the Disk Image file name dialog box, select the image file that you have created (the one on the CD).
3. Click YES to proceed with the intergrity check. (This will take approx 15-20 mins).
4. Once the intergrity check is complete, click CONTINUE.
5. Remove the CD from the drive and then restart your PC.

It is important that you verify your image, otherwise there is little point making an image only to find it doesn't work when you really need it.

So well done, for doing that step. :-)

Yes, your image on the CD contains Ghost.exe so that you can restore your PC if Windows has packed a big sad.

You will need to go into your BIOS and make sure it is enabled to boot from a CD.

124019 2003-02-26 04:48:00 Hello Jen,

Thanks for the quick reply :)

<<Then, place your first CD into the drive and then re-start your PC. The computer will start up in DOS automatically and will launch the DOS version of Ghost.>>

Well, the problem is that it does not start up in DOS automatically. The Ghost CD (there is only one CD: just Win98 and IE and NSWks 2003 on the HD) is in the CD ROM, but as I said, Win98 starts up as usual. Dunno if I am el thicko - duh - but I really think I made the Ghost CD correctly. Any other ideas? Thanks.

124021 2003-02-26 04:53:00 Hmmmnnn.....just thought...... that I have Go Back installed, and it seems that Ghost will not operate if Go Back is running.

Maybe this is why the Ghosted Image CD will not start automatically?

During start up you should see a message about hitting a certain key to enter the BIOS. Try the DEL key if you miss the message (it goes past quite fast). Once you are in BIOS, the setting should be found under "Advanced BIOS settings". I cannot be any more specific than than sorry, as I try to avoid messing with the BIOS settings and I cannot remember the details. Some one else may be able to give you step by step details.

Umm .... you are putting the new CD with the image you just made into the drive, and not the installation ghost CD? (Sorry - I am just checking) :-)

Oh my, it looks like I may have a DUH el thicko moment.

Ah, do you mean I am supposed to put in the Norton System Works 2003 CD, or another Ghost CD, rather than the Ghosted image CD that I just made? To answer your question: yes, I did put in the Ghosted image CD.

Super :D, the image CD is the one you want. Sorry, I didn't mean to insult your IQ, but I was unsure of what CD you meant and thought it was best to check rather than assume that detail :-)

Have you had a look at your BIOS set up yet? I have had another look at my manual and instructions are given on page 226 on how to change the BIOS settings.

The Roxio GoBack program - I don't think that you need to disable it just to verify an image.
