123970 2003-02-26 02:26:00 Like many people I still use programs written for DOS or Win3x
Better faster easier to use than the later programs (eg DCWIN, GradeGuide, EZ-TREE, ASEASYAS, Early Bird etc), I could not manage without them. OK so what if I upgrade and get a computer running XP Home? How do I run these super programs (easily please).

123971 2003-02-26 02:38:00 There is Program compatibility Wizard, but Im not sure if it emulates DOS.

Otherwise, make a boot disk from within XP and boot into DOS when you wanna play those games. You might wanna look at running XP and DOS too... I could suggest running ToyBox II as a DOS OS (Search previous posts here of mine for a downloadable URL, its shareware, but very good). You could then boot off the floppy into DOS (Take just as long as a reboot) and play DOS games like that?

123972 2003-02-26 02:48:00 XP is the first MS operating system to have no DOS underlying it, as you have gathered already.

It does have a "DOS Emulation" but there are no guarantees that any/all of your DOS based programs will run under XP.

You are indeed wise to realise this beforehand, and the best bet would be to try the programs on a friendly XP owners PC first, because if they don't run, and you don't want to reboot into a pure DOS everytime you need to run them there may be nothing that can be done.

On the other hand you may be pleasantly surprised that they do run, so do try first.

123973 2003-02-26 03:02:00 Whist you rarely make mistakes godfather I must point out that XP is the first *home user* OS with no DOS underlying it. BIFF (1)

123976 2003-02-26 03:36:00 XP should run your DOS applications OK as long as the apps don't rely on the use of peripherals.
If you want to print or do extensive disk operations you will more than likely run into problems because XP/2000 have replaced the old DOS based architecture with Win32 protected mode devices. This means you have a much better working environment but makes it difficult perform operations using old software.
This is a **Design Feature** as it is often unsafe to perform DOS operations due to its differences with Windows.

The only true way to find out whether your programme will work will be to try running it. Don't be fooled into thinking there is no DOS prompt in XP/2000 its still there (under Accessories -> Command Prompt)
That's not to say DOS still exists (which it doesn't) but a text interface that looks like classic DOS is available.

123977 2003-02-26 04:37:00 Is it not possible to partition the HD into a section that has a bootable DOS version of Windows, like Win98 ?

Of course this means that you could not run Win XP and the DOS program at the same time. Anyhow, I have heard that the above partition thing works, but I wonder if anyone has actually done it successfully?

123979 2003-02-26 08:40:00 Yes, Im young, and very proud of myself too...

I dont know it all, but I know a lot, especially for my age.

Being optimistic, when I am older, chances are I'll have a WHOLE lot more experience/knowledge, simply because I am young and starting early.

I have a lot to offer people, and my age should not be a barrier because of that.

I hope you do not feel offended that you are being helped out by people who are 'still young', as that would show true lack of character.

Im not the oldest or strongest kid on the block, but im still doing VERY well for the age I am.

I still enjoy learning, and am learning, and the way I see it, Ive many more years than most people here to learn things about computing, so Im seeing being young as an advantange.

I hope you would too....
