124710 2003-02-28 08:02:00 I had a program briefly loaded on my computer which took over my .bmp and .jpg files, and when I uninstalled I lost my file associations with them. Thanks to advice obtained here I have my .bmp files associated with MSPaint and that's now OK. However my .jpg files decided to open in MSPaint also and they look garish so it's not really right. I can't find the .jpg icon in my list of "open with" programs. I suppose it used to be there because my .jpg files used to have the little icon with - from memory - a little paintbrush diagonally across a little picture frame, something like that. Where's it gone? Clicking "other" in the "open with" program list doesn't show me anything like I want. Help will be much appreciated.

124712 2003-02-28 08:31:00 Thanks roofus, that gives me good pics again. They seem to be tiff files now rather than jpeg but the quality is there and I can play about with them so I don't care.

Unfortunately after getting rid of my hostile program, when I told my system to associate my .bmp files with MSPaint it did so but also threw in all the jpeg files by its own decision. That was the history. Now having followed your advice, when I choose a .bmp file - and I do look at the filename suffix to make sure - and follow your advice, I find all my .bmp files have decided all by themselves to open with kodakimg also. I don't want that. I might be old-fashioned but I like fiddling with my .bmp files in MSPaint. How can I stop my .bmp and my jpg files from playing copycat? I do want them to open with the progam of my choice, not theirs. Once again Roofus thanks for your prompt help, it is appreciated.

124713 2003-02-28 09:01:00 I suppose the real question is - how do I tell my computer that jpg and bmp files are NOT the "same file type" and thus prevent the same program from deciding to open both file types instead of the one type which is all I have chosen? StanHood (3253)
124714 2003-02-28 09:57:00 open windows explorer --> tools --> folder options --> file types. change them individually for each extension. roofus (483)
124715 2003-02-28 11:21:00 Thanks Roofus, but I might end up calling a local computer guru. If I do what you say I get file types window of course, but when it arrives it deselects the file I want to change the association of, and while the file types screen is there I can't select a file. I notice that there are a lot more programs listed in file types when accessed this way you said, compared with accessing file types via right click on the file and "open with". Also, MSpaint is only in the latter file type list and JPEG IMAGE is only in the former. It is in the too-hard bin for me and I haven't even gotten onto all the strange wording and options in the file types window. Thanks anyway but I think I will go and buy an abacus, I can understand pushing beads along a wire. StanHood (3253)
124716 2003-03-08 13:22:00 I think I have SOLVED my problem. The real question was, how now to open ONLY my bmp files with MSPaint and ONLY my jpg files with another program. I couldn't find the jpg icon in my useable "opens with" list after I had kicked out my rogue program (useable list? - yes, see my other comments this page), so as a result of lots of reading I decided to try opening my jpg files with "iexplore", and it worked the same way I am used to seeing jpg files open - victory thus far except so far the same program insisted on opening both bmp and jpg files which still left half the files looking funny. Oh, and one now gets the IE icon and not the jpg icon but I don't care about that because the jpg files themselves are behaving normally when opened with iexplore.

Now to make the system see jpg and bmp files as different file types again just like it used to, I fiddled with the registry. Rob Clarke's Press F1 column (Feb.2003 PC World, p.106, "Restore file associations") gave me the clue. I first backed up my associations file as per Rob's advice, then while I was still in H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\classes, I opened the bmp folder and on the right half of the screen noted that the default was "PV1 file". I then opened the jpg and jpeg folders and saw the same default file type on the right (PV1 file). I double-clicked on the "default" icon in each case and changed the defaults via the pop-up screen to "bmp file" and "jpg file" respectively. And that fixed my problem. my bmp and jpg files are seen as different types once again. In future I will be wary about loading anything on my computer which wants to usurp my right to choose how I play with my files.

124717 2003-03-08 21:06:00 Good to hear that you solved your problem by yourself -- best way to learn I reckon! Not that you shouldn't come here when you are really stuck, of course, but it is good when you get pointed down the right path and can go and try some more things. :-)

Anyway, have you heard of IrfanView? It is a free graphics viewer which can also do some really neat little tricks such as convert .bmp files to .jpg files. I find it so handy for viewing my pics and YOU can set whatever picture files to be associated to open with it. It is very well behaved in that respect. If you want to try it you can find it at www.irfanview.com

As far as trying out other programs go, I always choose "Custom Install" so that I can go through the options and choose what to allow and not to allow when a program installs itself. That way I can prevent a program taking over associations, etc that I am already happy with.
