124619 2003-02-28 02:52:00 Sometimes when Im in GNOME (Like now for example) I'll be running a program that requires me to be root, only the little Keys dont appear in my taskbar to let me forget my root authorization.

So I cant logout unless I hit Ctrl + Alt + F1, login to that virtual console and type init 6 to reboot.

Otherwise, Im stuck as root, like now, but Id rather not be.

I think it happened after I ran redhat-config-services in a Konsole window.

How do I FORCE it to forget my authorization? I know its got it coz stuff that would normally require my root password dont!

Thanks

124620 2003-02-28 03:02:00 Doesn't Ctrl/D end the root session? You shouldn't have to reboot to logout. :D Graham L (2)
124621 2003-03-01 10:27:00 I am not sure what you mean, so I posted to another group this is the reply
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but I have an idea. You say that when
you use an application that requires a root login (IOW, a window comes up
asking for the root password), you put in the password and then can open
other programs without having to put in the password.
I believe that with RH8 (you do not mention your RH version), you will
login to one root program and will not have to for a few minutes which I
think is five.
I'm not sure what you mean when you say you cannot logout. I'm guessing
that the only problem you have is that you want it to immediately forget
your password. If that's the case, you can probably make an easier
question. Something like; 'I type in the root password, but I cannot
cause the password to be immediately forgotten due to the keys icon not
showing up in the applet area. How do I manually do this task?', would be
better.
You say that you cannot logout. I'm a bit confused by this. You cannot
go to the gnome panel, or kde panel and choose logout? What happens if
you press CTRL-ALT-ESC? I think that rebooting the pc is a bit rash.
Please post with some more specifics about the inability to logout.
124622 2003-03-02 05:16:00 Alrighty:
I run the progs, aas root, only the keys dont show up (This is RH8, using Gnome or KDE 3 (Or is it 3.1??).
Only then when this happens, can I not logout.
By this, I mean that I hit the logout button and nothing happens, or so I thought.
After about 10 minutes, it came up with the usual 'Logout' screen, but this is only when Ive got root permissions etc.
So yes, I would like to know how to remove my temp. access to the system as root, and that would fix the 'I cant logout while Im root' thing.
Thanks :-)
124623 2003-03-03 05:06:00 Maybe a better question should be why are you constantly needing to run programmes as root?
Surely you only need root to make system changes and the like (and for this you can login as root rather than su root'ing all the time.
What do you do that constantly requires root priviliges?
For your original question you could always back up your home directory, delete its contents and then bring back things systematically. This way you'll locate the config file that is causing you grief.
