124676 2003-02-28 02:27:00 In 2K, I was able to hit Ctrl + Alt + Del followed by Enter and it'd lock my screen so that only me or and Administrator could unlock it.

Now, I wanna be able to do that in XP. Trouble is, everybody is an administrator, so unless I can simply pray that they're not clever enough to enter their own username and password into the box (They might be.. never can tell ;-)) Im looking for a program that'll let me lock the screen, and prefferably let it only be unlocked by me!

Is it possible or am I hoping for the impossible here?

Thanks

124677 2003-02-28 02:58:00 If they're going to be doing stuff like that then clearly they don't have the resposibility to be an administrator. -=JM=- (16)
124678 2003-02-28 03:12:00 "everybody is an administrator"? Whose bright idea was that?

There should be only very few people with administrator privileges, and they should use normal accounts for most of their work. That's a basic rule of security.

124679 2003-02-28 03:15:00 Ah, but they need to be admin for a lot of the stuff they do, like installing proggys, especially when Im not around to enter an Admin password :-) Chilling_Silence (9)
124680 2003-02-28 03:25:00 Again, if "everybody" installs programmes, and "has to" have administrator privilege, you might just as well use W3.1 or W95 to get real security. :D

Since it's like that, just get a bit of cardboard. Write "Please Don't Touch" on it with a felt pen, and stand that on the keyboard when you leave the machine.

124681 2003-02-28 04:03:00 You should be able to trust the administrators. If not, they can get lost IMO.

Can you make them "power users" with just enough rights to do what they need to do?

Have you tried the logging with admin account thing. I have a feeling that only the account that is logged in will be able to unlock it. The others can only end the session.

124682 2003-02-28 04:53:00 Ah, Yes, Power users.. I'll give that a shot. That still leaves me with HOW to do it, hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del gives me the Task manager.

Ive got fast user switching enabled if it makes a difference, and not classic login :-)

124683 2003-02-28 04:58:00 WINKEY + L does it. -=JM=- (16)
124684 2003-02-28 05:11:00 Errr... I knew of that, It actually switches user (Not logout.. but switches users, back to the login screen so my stuff would still be running)!

Im wanting it Locked, not logged out :-)

Thanks

124685 2003-02-28 05:25:00 Well really, Switch User is kind of like Lock Computer, only other users can have apps running too.

Anyway, disable Fast User Switching and the Welcome logon screen (might only be the Fast User Switching) and you can then unlock the computer. Also, type "control userpasswords2" in the Run dialog to set requiring Ctrl + Alt + Del to logon, and other advanced user settings - thanks to BabeRuth for that piece of info.
