124703 2003-02-28 01:03:00 hey guys,

i know there are plenty of posts on this topic but i can't find anything relevant to my problem .

first . . . the specs:
Compaq Prestario 5396
Pentium II
92 mb Ram

turned the computer on 2 mornings ago and it went it to safe mode because windows failed to load correctly the night before (for whatever reason) .

Went into safe mode and then ran a defrag, scan disk, rebooted and came to the screen where you select safe mode, selected "normal" and it wouldnt load . So pretty much going into a big circle .

Can get onto the internet and everything ok, altho takes a long time to connect and the windows logon box comes up just before it is fully connected .

Started up this morning with the list to choose from again, selected normal and loaded correctly expect the screen is at 16 color and doesn't load all the options to change the screen res .

I've got those original disks so a complete re-format and begin all over again could be a possibility if there is no soloution . . .

any ideas or soloutions would be greatly appreciated .

124704 2003-02-28 01:09:00 Try removing the Graphics card from Device Manager, this will force it (Upon reboot) to reset all its display drivers.

Otherwise, Try updating them from the web

124707 2003-02-28 07:40:00 I got stuck in this mode a few years ago, no it was my computer really, and eventually found there was a font missing, which prevented a normal boot. Sorry I can't remember the details and a quick search of Google shows nothing. MSKB shows:

support.microsoft.com

support.microsoft.com

Hope these can help.

124708 2003-02-28 07:45:00 I believe you have some bad stuff in your autoexec.bat
best thing to do, is to rename your autoexec.bat so it doesn't get loaded.

Then in regards to your display, you can do as someone suggested and uninstall the videocard or you could just go into the advanced part (where you change your screen res) and reinstall the propper video adapter.
