2003-02-27 22:55:00 | Win 98 (!st Ed), 360 odd RAM, 750 MHz cpu, Tyan MB. Whenever booted from a cold start the system never completes the process. Instead it stops with a flashing cursor at the screen before the Win splash screen. A reset always is sucessful. Have re-installed win98 over the top, but it made no difference. Looked for a file I believe is called 'Event.log' but could not find it anywhere, probably a diff op system. Is there anywhere else where errors etc are recorded? Any thoughts?

2003-02-28 00:30:00 | Hi Jams, thanks for reply, no it has done it only since the machine received a heart/lung transplant (MB and CPU), so guess it must be somehow associated with that, but don't understand how or why. A full scandisk did not reveal any bad sectors at all.

2003-02-28 00:53:00 | The bootlog file probably won't help. It's failing before it gets to Windows. :D Have a look at the BIOS settings. It might not be detecting the hard disk properly in a cold start. Perhaps disabling "fast POST" might give the disk a bit more time to start up. When you reset, the power supply is up and the disks are spinning, so it all works.

2003-02-28 00:58:00 | when you did the heart/lung transplant did you reinstall windows? or did you remove ALL the old drivers? or finally did neither? | tweak'e (174) | |
2003-02-28 01:49:00 | Gidday Tweak'e, well I suppose neither really. All I did do was to re-install windows by copying it over the top, figuring that would overwrite everything - is this not the case? | Curly (487) | |
2003-02-28 02:10:00 | boot into safe mode and go into device manager. check to se if old devices are there. if so remove them. if in doubt remove ALL devices and reboot. make sure you have all your drivers at the ready, including the drivers for your new motherboard. with win9x/me its best to format/reinstall when doing motherboard changeovers as windows tends to optimise itself to the motherboard on install. however a clean out of drivers and a driver reinstall often (tho not always) works ok.
