124509 2003-02-27 10:14:00 At home we need to get adsl. Probably a Jetstart plan.

Thing is we want at least 3 computers to connect using the one high speed connection.

An old win95 Pentium 200,
a win2000 1.5Ghz Celeron,
and a winXp 1.1Ghz Athlon.

I believe we need a router with 4 ethernet port connections built in. I am ruling out the usb routers because one of the computers has win95. Am I right so far?

I am having extreme trouble trying to find the cheapest one that can do everything. Preferably one that has 10/100network, 4 Eth ports, has a telepermit, and can do 8Mbs d/l and 1MBs upload. Not too worried about the inbuilt firewall.

Anyone know one that would be well under $500?

124510 2003-02-27 10:21:00 Should be able to find one like that easily at your local games/electronics store, or DSE. agent (30)
124511 2003-02-27 10:24:00 what about getting an adsl router and a 4port switch seperatly. advantage being is you don't lose the network when the adsl modem is turned off or gone faulty. plus its easier if you need to upgrade later on. tweak'e (174)
124512 2003-02-27 10:35:00 Well I have just brought a Dynalink RTA300, it has 4 Lan + 1 USB port and works really well, I cant fault it at all, and it was a breeze to setup, not to mention it includes a microfilter which saves you twenty bucks!

Agent mentioned DSE; well before I decided on the Dynalink modem I went to DSE and asked about their (slightly cheaper) router/hub, the sales clerk told me not to touch it with a 50 foot barge pole, apparently they overheat very badly (get very hot) and have a hard time maintaining a connection. My Dynalink on the other hand, runs nice and cool, holds a connection well, and I even have a laptop connected to it running a wireless bridge so that I can get fast internet anywhere on my floor!

Cheers

Liam

BTW; The Dynalink RTA300 is so new that it isn’t on the Dynalink site yet, however Gamma Computers have them in stock.

Why would you turn it off, (unless you had a DSE one, and it needed to cool down :p), as for faulty, well have you seen a faulty Dynalink RTA300, I think not :D

Forgot to add that the RTA300 retails for $359 + GST (at Gamma anyway).

Sure can, just setup say a shared folder on all of the boxes, and then just drag'n'drop in network neighborhood.

Yep, you might just have to enable guest account's on the XP and 2000 machines, and they don't always like to talk to 9x machines, you might also have to fiddle with (or disable firewalls) as they try to block most local network traffic.

You can go 100m point to point!

www.gamma.co.nz, but these routers are quite new and probably wont be up there yet, give them a call on 09 444 3333.

124518 2003-02-27 19:11:00 Oh, and if you have any trouble with Gamma, or any more questions about the router, then ask to speak to a guy called Liam ;) in the workshop, he works there on friday, and has just recently set one of these routers up :p, (like 2 days ago :D). nz_liam (845)
