2003-02-27 08:03:00 | My operating system is MSWin Me. Some time ago I installed the print directory batch file as shown in NZPCWorld August 1997 p 115 and Feb 1998 p 117. I now want to remove it. Can someone please tell me how to remove it as the remove option suggested in the 1998 article above is greyed out.

2003-02-27 08:40:00 | It sounds to me as though possibly you didnt click on the Edit button after you selected File Folder. Its the print command in the Actions window that is to be removed, not the folder. | Terry Porritt (14) | |
2003-02-27 09:51:00 | Terry....thanks for the reply My operating system WIN Me My procedure following the magazine article is win explorer\tools\folder options\file types\folder(not file folder) "to change settings that affect all 'folder' files click advanced." At this stage the 'Edit File Type' dialogue box appears and shows 'explore, open, partition magic 6.0, and Print Directory'. The buttons on the right hand side are 'New, Edit, Remove, and Set Default.' of which Edit and Remove are grey. Highlighting 'Print Directory' makes no difference to these buttons which is where I run out of ideas. I appreciate your help................teakonga

2003-02-27 19:12:00 | Well gosh, I just discovered my Edit and Remove buttons are greyed out too, you are not alone. So another problem to wrestle with, if the answer turns up I'll post back. Cheers.

2003-02-27 22:47:00 | As usual the answer to this weird problem lies in the Registry, it involves changing the EditFlags values. This is what needs to be done if you are happy with Registry editing. To be on the safe side I exported each of the subkeys I edited to .reg files so that they could be restored if things went wrong. To enable the Edit and Remove buttons in Folder, start regedit, click on the + box for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and scroll down to Folder. Highlight Folder and in the right hand pane right click on EditFlags, and select Modify. Change the value you find there to 02 00 00 00 To enable the Edit and Remove buttons in File Folder, scroll to Directory, highlight it and change the value of EditFlags to 02 00 00 00, the same as above. If you have problems I could post the .reg files to do this, but often PressF1 mucks up the formatting of them, but I suppose checking with preview would reveal any editing that would need to done. | 124441 | 2003-02-28 03:45:00 | Terry Thanks again. Sounds a little tricky to me but I will give it a go, and take things VERY, VERY SLOWLY & CAREFULLY. Will let you know how I get on. Kia Ora

2003-02-28 04:03:00 | Maybe merging a .reg file would be the easieat way to go. This is the value that needs to be inserted: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\Folder] @="Folder" "EditFlags"=hex:02,00,00,00 If you copy and paste this into Notepad, making sure there is a carriage return after the last line, then save as with a name like folder.reg to somewhere convenient, then depending on how things have been setup either click or double click on the .reg to merge it into the registry. That value will overwrite the existing one. However it would still pay you to navigate to the Folder key in regedit highlight it and click registry-export at the top to save the original value, just in case ! If the buttons for File Folder are also greyed out as mine were, then this is the reg file that would need to be merged: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory] @="File Folder" "EditFlags"=hex:02,00,00,00 Cheers

2003-02-28 04:07:00 | For some reason F1 has made some of the above in bold, it wasnt meant to be, it has a mind of its own at times :) | Terry Porritt (14) | |
2003-02-28 04:49:00 | Hi Terry I managed to do your first suggestion OK until I tried changing the 1d2 in the Value Data box when I found that I couldn't insert the spaces between the 02 00 00 00. What am I not doing? Your second suggestion looks even more complicated at first glance and without looking at it carefully. If regedit fails then I'll try that. Thanks

2003-02-28 05:02:00 | Editing those values is a bit tricky, doesnt seem to follow common sense, try changing the values from the right hand side, use the back space key to delete. There may be a string of zeros at the left hand side leave those, just try to change d2 01 00 00 to 02 00 00 00 Incidently Ive checked on another Win98SE and win95, and those button are all greyed out too. I think that must be the default option for folders, but if you look at other entries they are not all greyed.
