Trust me as long as you havn't disabled virtual memmory then your physical memmory going to 0 has nothing to do with the problem you are facing.

124502 2003-02-28 09:03:00 Thanks Roofus. So is your last reply saying that it can only be a programme fault i.e poorly written. If so then how come they are not getting heaps of others complaining. As they say that no one else is experiencing this problem. Peter M (852)
124503 2003-02-28 09:15:00 run the resourse meter and see what the resourses are before and after running the program. tweak'e (174)
124504 2003-02-28 10:18:00 Thanks Tweak'e. Have checked and the results are :-
Before --- System resources 79% free
User resources 79% free
GDI 90% free

While programme is open --- 70% free
70% free
82% free

After closing 79%
79%
90%

124505 2003-02-28 10:21:00 therefore there are two scenarios
1. you have vmm disabled. look by rightclicking on "my computer" performance and then virtual memory, ensure that you let windows handle the settings

2. The prog you have doesn't know how to address the memory correctly.

124506 2003-02-28 10:48:00 this one is a little werid.

you don't have a compressed drive by any chance?

whats the program you are having trouble with called?

i would install another 128 meg of ram anyway. the increase in speed makes it well worth while.

double check the virtual memory isn't disabled and check the vcache settings.

124507 2003-02-28 11:37:00 No drive is not compressed. Yes Vmm was disabled for a while but is now back to letting Windows manage it. It was one of their suggestions to overcome the problem but had the same result both ways. What is Vcache setting and where do I find it?
There response to the problem was :-
Out of memory (error7)
More memory was required than is available or a 64K segment boundary was encountered. This error has the following causes & solutions:-

(1) You have too many applications, documents or source files open.
Close any unnecessary applications, documents or source files.

(2) You are running Windows in standard mode.
Restart Windows in enhanced mode.

(3) You are running Windows in enhanced mode but have run out of
virtual memory.
Increase virtual memory by freeing some disk space or raise
minimum level in virtual memory monitor.

(4) You have too many device drivers loaded.
Eliminate any unnecessary device drivers.

(5) You have run out of space for public variables.
Reduce the number of public variables. (Don't know where or how)

Have tried all of these except the last two. Also sent the disk back to them and had it checked & they said there is nothing wrong with it.

124508 2003-02-28 21:16:00 for vcache look in msconfig/system.ini/vcache

ChunkSize=512
MinFileCache=16384
MaxFileCache=98304

example of settings.

the only other thing i could find is ms article here (support.microsoft.com)

a fw other tweaks you could try are..... in system.ini/386enh

LocalLoadHigh=1
MinSPs=8
MinPagingFileSize=204800 (virtual memory minimum size)
32BitDiskAccess=ON (if any probs disable this one)
