124491 2003-02-27 09:59:00 I have been given an application to instal that will let me select parts & order online for my business. When I run it I get an out of memory error message. System monitor shows that unused physical memory is sucked down to 0 as soon as I open the programme. No other programmes on my PC have anywhere near this effect when run. The company I got it from have tried it on their system & say it is ok. System monitor figures displayed are:-
Before opening --- Last value 19886080
Peak value 20004864
After opening ---- Last value 0
Peak value 1594400
My PC system is Pentium 2 300Mhz 64Mb ram 4.5Gb drive running Win 98. I have 2.9Gb left on hard drive. Have closed down every possible programme but still this one empties the memory pot. Any ideas as to what would cause this and how to fix it.
Thanks

124492 2003-02-27 19:57:00 What are the specs required to run this program? Susan B (19)
124493 2003-02-27 20:46:00 Ram is so cheap get some more 128 megs about $40 to $50 should do it kiwibeat (304)
124494 2003-02-27 22:33:00 unless you have a fixed size swapfile i doubt you are actually running out of memory. its more likly you are runing out of resources. cut down the amount of programs you are running in the background.

also 64 meg in minimal with 98. get a stick of 128 at the very least. ram is quite cheap at the mo.

124495 2003-02-27 23:50:00 The company you got this from will have more than 64MB of ram. Of course it will work in their computer. :D Graham L (2)
124496 2003-02-28 07:53:00 Thanks for the replies. Requirements are:- recommended Pentium 200mhz Win 98 or higher, IE5 or higher, CDRom, 160mB Disc space & 32mB ram. Minimum required: - 486dx 66, Win 95, 100mB Disc space & 32 mB ram. I have tried it with everything possible closed down, even zone alarm, intermute etc. & still the unused physical memory plunges to zero straight away as soon as I open the programme. Peter M (852)
124497 2003-02-28 07:57:00 It's a poorly written programme then. Tweake's comments are correct.
While running your system monitor bring up the monitor for GDI and USER resources. then load up your prog, i'm sure you will see them move from about 80% down to 5% or less. and this is the result of your out of memmory message.
ref: Resources, and Memmory are too different things, the problem is that Microsoft uses the two terms very loosly in there error messages.

of course it will. running almost any program will do that. even windows itself will use all your ram. having all your memory used is not really a problem.

124499 2003-02-28 08:26:00 yea your monitor says you had a peak of 20Mb of physical memmory, this isn't something to write home about, Having outlook express open uses about 20MB, when it hits zero it uses your VMM aka pagefile and so as far as the computer is conncerned you have 20MB + 2.9G (from your hard drive) as Memmory
Hence it is resources.

124500 2003-02-28 08:29:00 Thanks again for input. Tweake I think you missed the point. Only this programme plunges it to zero. Opening windows, IE, Photoshop, MS Publisher etc and unused physical memory monitor only drops about one third of peak. This programme immediately causes the monitor to drop to the zero line.
