2003-02-27 07:22:00 | I was in linux today, and coz Ive got two soundcards, it uses my onboard AC '97 as its sound card, but still picks up my SB!Live 5.1 Channel fine. I rebooted into doze and left the PC for a wee while. Came back to it and logged in as my primary account (Ive got two on XP Pro, one that's got the SB!Live as its soundcard and the other has the onboard AC '97 sound) and the sound was all distorted when playing MP3's. Switch to the secondary user and its fine (With OnBoard sound). Could my SB!Live be faulty? Where do I start for diagnosis? Cheers Chilling_Silence

2003-02-27 08:35:00 | I "sort of" had that problem Chill, and it turned out that the preamp volume controls had gone to full, which was overloading the audio input so I got distortion at all sound levels. Lowered them back to normal and all was sweet. Cheers Billy 8-{)

Yes billy, thanks, that was my first stop, but when playing MPeg's that cant have their sound put through and EQ, I knew something was fishy. Now, my setup was fine on my other soundcard, with User2. I decided to remove my 3.5mm extention cord that Ive been using for the past week. I figured it couldnt be this, as it worked fine before, and still worked fine with the other soundcard. Turns out I musta overloaded it or something, but it doesnt like the fact that my SB!Live can pump the suond throughat such higher volumes any more. Dunno why, coz it was perfectly fine before, but when I plugged my headphones directly into the SB!Live, it was fine. So, lesson is I should try to fully diagnose it first and not take shortcuts. Second lesson - the 3.5mm extensions from DSE are cheap.. :( |

2003-02-28 04:51:00 | Uh, heh, :8}... You see, the thing is, in my family, things aren't usually done straight away... Eg, it was two weeks ago I told me dad that my Windows XP trial had ~24 days left before it expired. Two weeks on, and currently sitting at eight days left (it was nine this morning, the weird thing is, it doesn't run off my system time, or else it's counting exactly 2880 hours (120 days) from when I installed it), still haven't got my Windows XP Professional Academic version. Now onto the stupid Samsung Combo drive... I can still only read DVDs, can't do anything else with it, and unfortunately for me, the new supposedly region free firmware (yes, that's right folks, despite warnings, I flash my CD drives {not that way, you sick people}, I've done it about five times, too!) isn't region free, and I haven't even phoned Compulink to tell them about this matter. Will have to get onto this before May, as that's when it was manufactered last year. Hope my replacement doesn't die... Talking about defects, my replacement Ericsson T28 World phone still displays "NO NETWORK" all the time. And it was a replacement for a T28sc that did that. It's a common problem in the T28 range.

2003-02-28 20:27:00 | If the SB output is set to Autosense (default), sometimes it can configure to digital out (severe noise on analog speakers). I suspect the sensing is performed by checking the impedance of the 'speaker out'. If you have a dodgy cable, it could cause the card to switch to digital. Suggest you adjust the card properties to Analog out, if you are using analog speakers. :| | wuppo (41) | |
