124966 2003-03-02 04:33:00 I've recently reformatted, and since then my computer stalls or crashes approx 5 or 6 times a DAY when using folders (of all things!).

My system is stable on the net, can handle doing lots at once, and is generally running smooth... except when I want to open/close/move a folder, click on a file, or any drive in 'my computer'.

Sometimes it will stall, be unresponsive for a few seconds, and sort itself out. Sometimes I have to contrl-alt-del and [end task] on explorer which is 'not responding'. At worst, the whole thing crashes and I have to reboot.

Could it be a bad installation of windows? I appear to be virus free and everything else is smooth, and I've ever seen this before with any of my past installations with the exact same CD.

I'm running win ME on 324 megs ram (please shhhhh if you're going to tell me to get rid of ME - it works great for me with this system)
Windows updates have been completed, and it doesn't matter how long the computer has been on for or what else its doing at the time (if anything).

TIA,
BOBBLE :D

124967 2003-03-02 05:03:00 I saw this problem once on I think a win98 system, it did not like opening folders or anything from My Computer but went smooth as from WindowsExplorer.

Have you tried working from the Windows Explorer link in the Start menu rather than from My Computer.

Another option might be to consider a third party file moving program such as Windows Commander.

124968 2003-03-02 05:15:00 I would be tempted to try installing a fresh version of IE 6, even yhough your problems are with Windows Explorer
Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer share quite a bit of the OS.

IE6 is on most PC magazine cover CDs, to avoid a download.

And I agree with your comments on ME, I ran 3 PCs here on it, no problems, quite stable..

124970 2003-03-02 09:12:00 tweak I think you may have stumbled upon something there! Yes motherboard drivers were loaded but it seems they aren't quite right X-(

I'll have a play next time I'm offline :)
