124863 2003-03-01 09:08:00 In true commercial moneymaking style, software companies upgrades are actually partly downgrades. I have noticed over the past few versions of zonealarm that fewer features are actually being offered. Take 3.7 which just came out the other day. The feature of manual updates has ben removed. You have to 'upgrade' to zonealarm pro to get this.

Money is greater than security, the customer doesnt matter anymore.

124866 2003-03-01 09:41:00 hmmmm.....
they offer something for free which works really well and thousands of people use it, they have a paid version which is necessary as they are a business not a charitable organisation. They rely on people to buy the paid version so naturally would make the difference between the free and paid more discernable so as to attract more people to it. I dunno but sounds like we are biting the hand that feeds us. Just my view.

124867 2003-03-01 09:46:00 I just stuck with the original version on my 'doze box. easy ey?

BTW. startlinux.co.nz is needing donations to survive. Seeing everyone wants something for nothing, my bet is that we about to lose a really good plain english Linux reference site

I agree. Suck the customer in, then pull the rug out under his feet

124870 2003-03-01 10:01:00 Baldy, i think that's why my operating system (SuSE8)costs $100 or thereabouts for the DVD, 7 CDs and the pretty book

I, of course, just copied the 7 CDs but atleast the guy who kept the DVD and the book in europe paid something for it before he sent the useless CDs over to us peasants in NZ

Linux seems to run on T shirt sales and such like!

:D

124871 2003-03-01 10:12:00 Well, maybe Linux should start showing a more professional attitude and start charging. Then they won't have to run things on a shoe string. If its so goode, people won't mind paying for it, and it might get more support. If things in business are free, they are usually rubbish. I am not saying that Linux is rubbish. Just pointing out a perception people have Baldy (26)
124872 2003-03-01 10:18:00 It's like the perception that the $40/hour tradeperson does a better job than the $20/hour tradeperson.
The best way to increase buisness is to charge more!

Human perception has a lot to be desired
