124806 2003-03-01 04:07:00 Computers running Win98SE
Host computer has fixed IP address 192.168.0.1 (as set by ICS wizard)
Client computer automatic IP address – usually 192.168.0.2
Using only TCP/IP protocol
Both computers can see each other on network and can access each others shares.

I can’t get ICS to work properly.
The client can get modem (Dynalink V1456VQE external) to dial and connect to ISP but can’t browse. IE6 comes up with DNS Server error – refreshing the page doesn’t help. I tried entering ISP’s primary DNS Server IP into Clients setting – didn’t make any difference.
I can successfully ping external IP addresses from the client machine.
There is no firewall running that would block communication.

Really need some help here. I’m about ready to take an axe to both computers!!

Thanks
Lucy

124807 2003-03-02 02:00:00 You went through the "proper" installation, with the Wizard. That should have got it working. (Microsoft says so. :D)

You didn't install ICS on both? That doesn't work. :-(

The client should use the master's IP address for the DNS server.

I'm not the expert on this: bumping you to the top of the page will wake them up, now they have recovered from Sat night. :D

124808 2003-03-02 02:25:00 Hey

You don't have any LAN settings specified under Connection Settings Internet Options do you? as this doesn't work due to the fact that those settings are for proxy servers.

Also, DNS Servers in the Network Settings are Case Sensitive, so be careful about that. I'd use your ISP's dns servers as the DNS servers for the client and the gateway is the Host.

Also, just something to try, on the client machine can you go to http://210.48.100.12?

124809 2003-03-02 02:50:00 Thanks guys .

ICS is only installed on the host machine and the host is allocating the client an IP address .
Have checked things a million and one times and they all seem to be ok .

As you say: it should work 'cos Microsoft says so - but it don't!!!

Have tried uninstalling and reloading but didn't change anything .

I've set ICS up a couple of times before on other networks and never come across this problem .

I gave up trying and this afternoon installed some proxy software that does the trick . Didn't really want to go this way but such is life!

Thanks for your replies
