| 124792 | 2003-03-01 03:06:00 | This question concerns MS Backup, the one found within Win98 under Accessories, System Tools, and makes files of the type .qic I have used this for a few years now, without problems. Last week I reformatted the HD and now am putting everything back in place. The problem is that I get this error message when trying to start MS Backup: "Start Catalogue Failed - MS Backup Access Denied" So, I went into Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup, System Tools.........and then unticked the box next to MS Backup. Then reboot. Then reinstall using the Win98 CD. Did this twice now, but still get the error message. What now? Do I need to go into the registry or?? Thanks, Steve_L |

| 124793 | 2003-03-01 10:44:00 | OK folks, I am going to answer my own question :^o, seeing that no responses meant that I have had to try and try again a la trial and error, with mainly errors. Luckily :) I had a back up that I made of Accessories / System Tools, on a CD. So I copied and pasted the Backup folder onto the HD. But it did not work. Kept trying and finally stumbled onto going into subfolders and taking everything off Read Only, using Properties (right click). But then I got an error that said "Backup System Not Found". Fumbling on, I discovered that instead of going into the options that were attached to the error message, I simply cancelled the error thingie and ho ho ho ;) there was the MS Backup box, ready to be activated. Even though my eyes and back are suffering from being at the screen fretting too much, I will definitely finish the day a happier person. Maybe this archived post will be accessed some day by some other person with the same or similar problem. Oh, BTW, I did finally go the the MS web site and search their Knowledge Base. Haven't done if for ages and it is very impressive with all of the solutions (because there are so many foul ups with MS software!!) but guess what - no specific help at all on the error message. >Someday later this year, I will have WinXP and will look back at this Win98 time, and think_______ (you can fill in the blank!). Cheers, Steve_L |

But, as you also discovered, there isn't anything for that error message :-( Never mind, glad you muddled through and solved it yourself (really the best way to learn computer stuff anyway) :-) Cheers, Rod J. |
