| 124922 | 2003-03-02 00:10:00 | i have a compaq presario and it came with windows ME, the hard drive it has is a 20GB, it is set into two partitions, the main one (C:) and another one called (SYSTEM_SAV D:), i have upgraded it to windows XP pro and was wondering if it was safe to delete the info in the 2nd partition, i dont no what it is but it never gets changed. any help would be great. |

Since you are now on XP there is little or no use for this info, except for some Compaq specific drivers perhaps. Before deleting, wait a few days and see what else F1 can throw up to you. | 124924 | 2003-03-02 02:10:00 | One reason to keep it is if you are planning to sell the machine in a reasonably short time. You could reinstall the original "ex-factory" Win Me, and sell it with a legal OS, while keeping the XP for another use. | Graham L (2) | ||
| 124925 | 2003-03-02 02:27:00 | I think if he upgraded to xp pro, he probably doesn't want to sell his computer just yet. Still a valid reason though. :) You could also check the other partition to see if it contains any files you need or something. I know when I upgraded to xp home, from winME I changed the filing system to NTFS, and I think it erased everything I had on the computer. I wonder if it had actually backed it up and partitioned it as yours did. Darn coulda saved myself some trouble :P |

| 124926 | 2003-03-02 02:39:00 | Second thoughts: a lot of Compaqs have not got the BIOS setup in ROM; it's on a special (invisible to MS, type 12) partition. You can tell by entering F10 (or is it F12?) when the white square is on the top RH corner of the screen. The disk based setup gives you an option to save itself on floppies (usually 3). If it's only a few MB, that's what it is, and you would be unwise to remove it. If it's lots of MB it will be a restore partition for WinMe. |
