| 125380 | 2003-03-04 01:18:00 | OK have read the FAQs on LANs but would still like some help please. Dell Dimension PC XP, internal ADSL modem Jetstream. LaptopToshiba Satellite 2520CDT Win 98. Want to network them so can use Jetstream on the laptop think would prefer to hardwire rather than try wireless different floors of the house with a concrete floor between. Am open to suggestions on that one. What type of wiring ie what specs? Wall plugs specs? What card for the PC? Are there any issues with sharing Jetstream on both? Just that will probably have to wire myself if want it done anytime this decade due to severe shortage of resources in the Queenstown area! Appreciate any comments |

Once that is done it should be pretty easy to setup the XP PC to share the Jetstream connection with the laptop. From memory go into Network connections in the Control Panel and run the Network Setup Wizard. |

| 125383 | 2003-03-04 03:43:00 | Worked a treat for me! No problems... Cat5 Crossover would be easiest, try drilling a hole in the floor in the corner of one bedroom... :-) |

| 125385 | 2003-03-04 05:08:00 | while we on the subject. i am thinking of putting a LAN jackpoint on a wall. the configuration is 2 bedroom (side by side). what is required for the procedure. is it still possible to wire each computer to the wall (cat5) with a cross over cable and using no hubs?? What wires are required inside the wall between 2 jackpoint?? Rayonline |

| 125386 | 2003-03-04 22:26:00 | Id say it'd be best to do it like this: ((PC1)) <Patch Cable><|Wall with equivalent of patch/passthru cable|><Crossover> ((PC2)) this allows for expansion later on, imply by swapping the passthru cable for a Switch/Hub if you decide to expand :-) |

| 125387 | 2003-03-04 23:03:00 | Yes. Wall block to wall block is straight through. ALWAYS. The pairs of the cable must be kept as pairs ... but the connector pins used for each pair are: 1,2 3,6 4,5 7,8. This matters. I would prefer to stick to straight through patch cables, and have a crossover adaptor ---to reduce the scope for confusion when you extend and get a hub and dosn't need crossover. If all the cables are the same, they are interchangeable. | Graham L (2) | ||

On the computer which has the ADSL modem in it :), You dont really need to worry about having a firewall on the computer, which connects to the computer which has the ADSL modem in it. (I dont :)) ( Unless your using a Router.......) Hope this helps Stu |
