125276 2003-03-03 11:42:00 I have been trying to scan for errors before defragging but my computer keeps coming up with a message saying that scan has had to start 10 times because windows or another program is writing to the disk .

I have turned everything off that I possibly can that appears to be running but the message still insists .

Is there any quick and easy way of turning off anything that may be running?

Frustrated .

125277 2003-03-03 11:54:00 Reboot and start in safe mode by hitting F8 just as you see Starting Win 98 or whatever. The other way is to hit Ctrl + Alt + Del and stop everything but Exploer that doesn't point to anything and I think Sys Tray. Sorry but don't know what OS you are using. mikebartnz (21)
125278 2003-03-03 19:50:00 I support "mikebartnz" in his or her suggestion of closing programs and using Ctr+Alt+Del.
I have Win98SE running a 30GB Pentium 111 system which was a real pain to defrag.
Now I close all open files and programs, Ctr+Alt+Del every oher program EXCEPT Explorer and Systray and then run Defrag. It occasionally has a couple of tries, but mostly runs straight through.
Takes a few moments to Ctrl+Alt+Del each program but well worth it.
Good luck.

125279 2003-03-03 20:22:00 Safe mode is even better Scouse, it gets rid of oddities that don't show up with the three fingered salute.

Cheers

125281 2003-03-04 02:53:00 Safe mode is the best way, as the others have said, but if you do it from Windows don't forget to disable your screensaver. FindFast is another (useless) program that can interfere with Scandisk. It is one you can get rid of. Susan B (19)
125282 2003-03-04 03:28:00 Can I add my pennyworth.

Using 98SE myself. Task Scheduler has to be disabled too if you are using it at all

125283 2003-03-04 04:40:00 I don't think Task Scheduler will load in Safe mode Iris.

I'm open to correction though.

Cheers

125284 2003-03-04 04:54:00 Also run a program called EndItAll. Free download, search google. Danger (287)
125285 2003-03-04 23:37:00 Think of it this way: scanning for disk errors and defragging is roughly equivalent to changing the oil in a car. It's preventive maintenance. Do you jump into the car and drive while the oil is being changed.

So start in safe mode, and give the maintenance operation a chance to work.
