125247 2003-03-03 09:34:00 I have a friend who wants an external storage. Has anybody used the Maxtor External 5000 with one button file back up storage?

www.maxtor.com

My friend uses a G4 Apple and wants to be able to transfer files to PCs when necessary as well as video, music composition and data back up.

Does the included software have partitioning software for the drive?
I like the dual connectivity Firewire and USB 2.0
Thanks

125248 2003-03-03 09:41:00 I personally wouldn't touch any maxtor drive with a 50 foot bargepole.... nz_liam (845)
125249 2003-03-03 09:44:00 Why would you not touch a Maxtor? Bad experience? Myke (3277)
125250 2003-03-03 10:24:00 Not a bad experience personally, I've never been stupid enough to purchase one . Maxtor seem to have a extraordinary number of faults/problems and have earned them selves a reputation for it, which is why I wouldn't touch one .

That's my 2 cents worth anyway .

Cheers

Pfft... before you go reading one person's opinion and taking it for gospel, consider the facts (www.mikhailtech.com). Plenty other sites out there praising the new Maxtors, if you can be bothered doing a Google search for them.

While Maxtors have had problems in the past, I don't think the new generation DiamondMaxPlus drives have had any issues. In fact, I believe the Seagate Barracuda IV's have had more issues than the current Maxtors.

125253 2003-03-03 11:36:00 And Fujitsu have had ongoing problems for a couple of years so the field gets even smaller. Some one I support has just got hold of a second hand IBM drive and I noticed it was manufactured in Hungary. Thats not saying it is bad but I thought it unusual as most drives appear to be manufactured in the Pacific rim. mikebartnz (21)

Oh, for sure do your own research, all I'm trying to get across here is that I wouldn't be seen dead with a maxtor (or a fujitsu come to think of it), what you or you friend buys is up to him, I'm just offering my opinion .

As far as drives go, my favorite at the moment are the Samsung's, they seem quite reliable and reasonably priced .

Cheers
