125231 2003-03-03 08:28:00 Just thought I'd rattle the cells a bit with this one.
I've got an XP machine that takes two pushes of the 'on' button to start up. The first time there is no beep, so it dosn't even get to the POST. Then I hold the 'soft power' button in and it dutifully switches off after about 5 seconds. I then allow the fans to stop (say another 5 seconds) and switch on again. And away it goes as if there nothing had happened abnormal.
Any ideas?

Cheers.

125232 2003-03-03 09:09:00 It sounds like the old issue between the motherboard requiring a valid power_good signal from the Power Supply before it will let the CPU begin booting.

If the power_good signal from the Power Supply Unit is not arriving, or not being recognised in time (say from a slowly failing capacitor) then the second time round its rises to the required voltage quicker and the system boots.

Problem is, its hard to tell if its a motherboard or PSU problem

125234 2003-03-03 12:07:00 It does sound like a power supply problem. How many Watts is your power supply rated for and how many things do you have connected. mikebartnz (21)
125235 2003-03-05 10:12:00 350 Watts I believe, as I remember asking for MORE. So apart from actually opening the case, I'm fairly certain of that.
As for connected 'things' (oh er!? :) ) there is only one HDD, one CD Writer, CD ROM, er, NIC, Video Card, Modem..... not sure what else you can be asking for as I'm not quite sure what is actually powered by the computer, and why some people want massive power supplies!
No printer, scanners or in fact any other peripherals as printing is done through the other computer on the LAN. And it's self powered! :D
Hope this helps? This is just one of those little annoying things but not annoying enough to spend vast money putting it in to a shop to be told it cost squillions then discover it was something simple!! LOL :D

Cheers!
