125088 2003-03-02 11:09:00 Hi there! I'm looking to upgrade my pc and considering its age I'm not sure whether a package deal or separate components is the better option.
What I want in a new system is a top line mobo, fast and big (80gb) HD, Amd or Intel CPU (2GHz), and new case, power supply and fans.
I will be using my exsisting memory (SDRAM PC100 320MB), monitor, cd-r/rw drives and 64mb nvidia graphics card.
I want to add at a later date when funds are readily available faster ram,CPU,Video cards and DVD.
What will cost more?, a made to order machine or one off the shelf even if its available that is.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

125089 2003-03-02 11:28:00 Id suggest that you build one yourself, but check the FAQ, as it has some stuff about it...
I'd still say that building would be better for you, short-term and long-run!

Check:

for the best PC hardware prices!

after all they are only an email away.

125092 2003-03-03 07:11:00 Hi

Have a go on the www.qmb.co.nz upgrade or comp builder for an idea of pricing. Trademe and http: is a good place to start too (you can follow the links to the shops with the overall best prices).

As mentioned go for DDR ram and, whether off the shelf or your own sweet creation, sell your spare bits off on trademe to help finance your purchases.

125093 2003-03-03 08:02:00 Going for separate components will probably cost you more than a package deal simply because you will more than likely pick out better quality components than what a package would have. You will get exactly what you want, however.

If you do not want to you do not have to build a system yourself just because you have picked out the components. Providing you order from one dealer most will be quite happy to assemble the system for you, though you might have to pay extra for that. It does not hurt to ask around.
