125262 2003-03-03 11:36:00 My 12 year old son has a 3 year old HP Pavilion 8509 that locks up when on the net or just using a program. It seems to do this after surfing through several web sites and when he is using a memory hungry program i.e. a game or graphics programs.

His friend has a computer the same and the same thing is happening to his also.

Would this be the CPU or the motherboard?

How can I check to see if these are working properly?

125263 2003-03-03 11:59:00 Could be lack of disk space. Run scan disk and the defrag after clearing out all tempory files in the temp directory and uninstalling any programs you do not use (use Start/Steeings/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs to do so). mikebartnz (21)

your computer may be holding RAM after opening other programs, which leaves less resouces for others. Restarting the computer after playing games etc, will reset all the computer recouces.

a program called ramidle can control the usage. for defraging either degrag in safe mode or you could try this:
www.mediahorizon.net power defrag lite.

its a good idea, to keep the computer clean of rubbish, by cleaning out
temp folder, cookies, webpage folder, and history.

good luck,

125265 2003-03-03 21:39:00 you havn't mentioned any details so basicly put i would start with a basic clean up and mantainence. clean out temp files, index cache (if you use IE), scandisk, defrag, check for spyware, check browser settings. tweak'e (174)
