125542 2003-03-04 10:45:00 I've run out of storage space on my Samsung 40GB drive and am looking at grabbing a 80GB Barracuda V (www.seagate.com) to plonk into my Windows/Linux Box, the main factor being that they are cheap (just under $200 Inc GST).

Does anyone have Opinions/Comments on these drives?

Cheers

Go for it, good price. Make it a 7200rpm not a 5400rpm.

125545 2003-03-04 18:22:00 I have a 40GB Seagate Barracuda IV and I am very pleased with it - it is very quiet and fairly fast as well. flyer590 (2523)

Ah yes, I remember the 40GB Barracuda 4's, my PC ate 2 of them last year :( Hence I'm on a samsung now :)

Rubber Door stop = Ex-Seagate Barracuda 4's? ;)

To Flyer 590 - I'd check whether or not your Barracuda 4 is from the same batch which has huge problems with over-heating, etc. There's a thread around here somewhere which discusses the problem of the Barracuda 4's...

No no no, the Barracuda 4's look nice with their lid's off hanging on the wall :D As for hanging a maxtor on the wall; I'd be murdered my the geek community here.... that's if I didn't jump off the oracle building first :p

125551 2003-03-04 20:30:00 I've seen a lot of barracudas die. I suspect that they be the dodgy drives dumped on the third world countries like um... NZ.
Non barracuda seagates on the other hand seem fine!
