125593 2003-03-06 04:02:00 I had a beaut pair of hi-power ultralinear audio output transformers, (the ones with the special silicon steel laminations) that I kept for years in anticipation of one day building a quality valve amplifier. I went to get them out the other day, when the thought of finally getting around to building it tickled my fancy, only to find that there was one missing. :(

I don't fancy building a mono amp, so that's the end of that. :_|

Cheers

125594 2003-03-06 04:06:00 I believe that Leak keep an order book for transformers. When they get the appropriate number they order a batch.

However. Have you looked at the price of valves these days? $35 for an ECC83. KT66s through the roof.

I have to confess that my 3-3 used ATC transformers. :D

125595 2003-03-06 04:28:00 Boy am I glad I didn't throw out my boxes of valves, I don't have any KT66's but I do have some ECC82's & 83's, and some EF86's too. I also have a few EL36's and they would work fine, if only I had the other transformer.

Life is cruel. :(

125596 2003-03-06 05:54:00 Hi Terry, Billy, . . Very nice to have these nostalgic valve amplifier thoughts . Yes I sure remember the Mullard 510 amp .

Made one in about 1956, and another later when stereo was introduced . Great sound, with big enclosures & 12" Wharfedales .

Later on made another 20watt amp using EL34's . Those were the days .

The price's you mention of valves these days are alarming . Luckily like you I have some spares in the junk box .

Thankyou also Billy for your clear analysis of power output, distortion, and speaker damage, which should clarify things for many PF1'ers .

Cheers . .

125597 2003-03-06 06:06:00 Hi Billy,
You make some interesting, intelligent points. I was only going by what I had read in audiophille magazines such as Absolute audio etc. Its a while since I've read up on the subject, so I may well have my facts scew-wiff. Its good to read something on the forum regarding audio for a change.

125598 2003-03-06 07:28:00 Been searching all evening for a 1968 Practical Wireless (aka "Camms Comic" to quote some prices to eat your hearts out, but no luck, from memory in those days an ECC82/12AU7 would have been about 2/6d to 5/6d

How about this from May 1940 Wireless World valve data supplement, KT66 15/-, the KT66 was a very long lived valve and was even cheaper after the war as government surplus, as was the 6L6G quoted here at 15/- .

125599 2003-03-06 07:54:00 Yes Terry, in those days the valves were "cheap" . .

Soon after that in the 1960's, transistors were the next big deal .

I recall being keen to construct a transistor radio, but after pricing the components, flagged it away .

hard to believe now, as transistors are also "cheap", but then each transistor to construct a 7 or 8 transistor radio, was about $6 each plus all the other components like coils, transformers speaker, etc . .

A big price in those days, as one transistor represented about 1/4 of the weekly wage . An early Ultimate, or Pacemaker retailed for about $78 complete .

Yes, those were the days .

125600 2003-03-06 08:49:00 Yikes talk about nostalgia .

It would seem that these days it takes about 400 new watts to do the work of 4 old watts . Hmmmm! I remember building amplifiers with two 6V6GT’s in push-pull and driving people out of halls . I think 6V6GT’s were rated about 4 . 5watts continuous and 13 watts peak . As Bazza said, a couple of 12 inch Wharfedales and you had all the volume you’d ever need .

Them were the days!

As an aside I can remember being told (by a very respected tutor at Petone Polytechnic) that transistors were a novelty item and would never have any commercial use! :8}

125601 2003-03-06 19:57:00 Would this amplifier (homepages.paradise.net.nz) be any good for a car? (shame it's not valve)

:D
