125675 2003-03-05 07:17:00 Hi every body

I have a HP Pavilion 6700 computer a couple of years old.
Lately I been experiencing the computer slowing down and such.
Have done the usual cleaning of temp and temp internet files.
Am running Win ME, linux 9.0 dual boot.

Have 3 partitions one for Linux one for the C drive and another one that I use for personal use.

I thought that, if I done a Recovery, (which came with the compter) I would put all the non original programs and files on to the personal drive.
That way they are/not affected by the Recovery, yes/no.

Thanks for any advise.

125676 2003-03-05 07:56:00 Be warned that if you use the recovery disk your hard disk will be put back to the same state as when you acquired the PC so you will more than likely loose your Linux partition and may loose your personal partition unless that had been done when you got your PC. You will also loose all your updated drivers etc.
Have you run Scandisk and defrag.

125677 2003-03-05 08:05:00 You would need to have a separate (second) hard drive to keep the non-windows and personal stuff safe.

As stated your C drive and all the partitions would be destroyed by a full system disk restore, and the pc would be just as it was when new.

I am very familiar with the 6700, nice quiet little pc. 600 mHz celeron. 15 GB HDD. Very reliable.

A cheap upgrade if you need one is to fit 2 x 128 MB ram sticks, in place of the existing 1 x 64 MB. (you may have already done this) Dick Smith RAM works fine. Dont try 256 MB sticks, its doesnt like them.

125678 2003-03-05 09:59:00 Thankyou Mike and Godfather,

I was misinformed on is matter it seems, but hey I have you guys to thank.
At least now I won't lose all my files.

Just have to get a second drive or another computer.

Did an upgrade a while back with one 128 stick and left the 64 in, so I'll take the 64 out and put in another 128, that might improve things bit.

cheers guys

125679 2003-03-05 11:13:00 Thats not right,i have a HP Pavilion 8618 and i have formated C: with windows 98 boot disk and recovery with HP CD's.It did not delete partitions.

the only thing it could do is write a new mbr,so you won't see linux.

when you run recovery cds it will put your OS back to when you got it from the shop it will not delete your partitions.

I am going to do it on my computer to show you can do it.

125680 2003-03-05 14:53:00 Thats interesting BL. and possible. I was basing my experience on an earlier HP, where it included a format and certainly deleted the partition I had created.

On the 6700 I now run XP, so I have a full installation disk and not a recovery.

I also run a second HDD as a means of backup.

The 6700 is now relegated to weather recording and runs most of the time.

125681 2003-03-05 22:24:00 This is how i use to do it (if i remember)

1:Format C: with 98 boot disk.

2:install windows 98se with HP recovery CDs.

When doing this with the HP cd's i could 1 format and recover or
2 just recover,because i had already formated C: i just recovered windows 98se.This just installed windows 98se.

But saying that your recovery cd's could be different!

i to now run XP and it's been a long time since doing this but if i did it now thats what i would be doing.

but remember what ever you do BACKUP YOUR SOFTWARE!:D

125682 2003-03-06 02:04:00 If it's a well behaved script, it will give you the chance to bail out before it does anything nasty. But the only way to find out if it's well behaved is to run it. :D Graham L (2)
