2003-03-06 18:09:00 | Soon if you are late paying you phone bill you get hit with a six dollar extra charge, I wish the company I work for could make so much money in so short time, [remaining text not inserted] Just to remind you as the bill comes in, [remaining text not inserted] with windows make a text file, put in how much you have to pay and the due date, then use "scheduled tasks" to remind you, You can alert yourself at the same time each day or/and each time you turn the computer on. "Why not pay when the letter come in" you might say, we don't all have a money tree in our back yard.[remaining text not inserted] Linux people can use Kalarm, it works so well and is such a pain, never mind you only have two weeks, [remaining text not inserted] Take care & enjoy yourself :) (someone has too)

No excuses for being late these days, other than insufficient funds. (All my customers, please take note). :-/ | Danger (287) | ||

2003-03-06 20:44:00 | I have found that the best way to avoid late payment surcharges is to pay immediately on receipt of the account . That way you get any prompt payment discounts that are on offer and don't waste time with reminders or any other aides-memoir . Your budget may take a hit the first time round, but after that your cashflow remains stable . If you have a number of regular bills, phase the change in over three or four payment cycles, upgrading one or two each month . A good credit rating is of immense value these days and the prompt payment discounts and occasional early payment bonus prizes etc . help ease the pain . When you think about it, there is very little to argue with here, as no matter how tight your budget, unless you are a complete ratbag (present company excluded of course) you are going to pay every account in full at some time or other . Same thing applies to credit cards, if you can't afford to pay the account when it comes you couldn't afford to buy the goods in the first place . Emergency expenses should be the only exception . All credit costs, but credit card interest charges are usurious . Credit card companies call people like me "freeloaders . " It is the nicest insult I've ever been called and I cry all the way to the Bank . :D Cheers Billy 8-{) :| Updated homily: Procrastination not only steals time and dreams, it also ruins credit ratings and can leave you sitting in the dark with no way to call the power company . :D

2003-03-07 02:41:00 | I'd rather have the money sitting in my account until the last minute, earning what little interest is available, and keeping the balance up to cut back on bank fees. Easy way is to pay bills online and set the payment to go through in 3-4 weeks or whenever it is due. | Danger (287) | |
2003-03-07 03:01:00 | Personally i always aim to keep things as billy suggests, but then spend up large on some asset one month, get behind and slowly work back to promt payment again. It kinda works .Clueless

2003-03-07 03:13:00 | What's the exact terminology of the surcharge? If they are not careful, they could be doing something illegal called "plusage". Power companies used to charge a 10% late payment charge if you paid later than 14 days after the account. The MED changed it to a "10% discount for early payment" when they discovered that they could be prosecuted for the plusage. | Graham L (2) | |
2003-03-07 03:16:00 | Prompt payment discounts (offered or asked for :D) beat the piddling interest you would earn Danger. Even mean sods like Telecom offer a better discount rate than current interest can earn. Do the sums. Cheers Billy 8-{) :D BTW I just got $20 discount on a $200 purchase for paying cash instead of charging. That's 10% interest if you like, tax paid or tax free, whichever flavour you prefer. Your smileage may vary.

2003-03-07 03:21:00 | As far as I am aware it is not illegal to charge penalties on late payment Graham, and it is not considered plusage provided the original pricing structure stands up. However it doesn't really matter. Prompt payment saves money so who cares how it is calculated? Delay payment and you pay more. End of story in my view. :| It's a no-brainer. Cheers Billy 8-{)
