125908 2003-03-06 03:48:00 I have a file I can not get rid of. When I open "Family Tree Maker" I have a file named XXXXTEMP that shows up as one of my files. It will not be deleted , re-named or cut. In side it it has a file with O kb's. When I try to delete it I get the message . File is in use. close program and try again.
But when I close FTM , the file XXXXTEMP disappears.
I can find it with windows, Search, while FTM is open, but when closed it can not be found.
I found one instance of XXXXTEMP in the registry and deleted it. But that hasn't removed the file.
I know it's not doing any harm, but it annoys me.
Useing "del" from the command line only brings up the message, file in use.

125909 2003-03-06 03:59:00 Think about what is happening. You stop the programme and the Temp directory and its temporary work file are removed. You restart the programme, and they reappear. As long as you have the programme in memory, the work file is in use.

It's a work file, and the developers responsibly remove the rubbish after they have finished. That's nice. :D

You obviously have too much time on your hands. :D Start using the programme, and you will probably see the work file size increase, and then be removed after you have saved work to a permanent file and exited the programme.

125910 2003-03-06 04:12:00 Hi Graham, Not quite right. I should have mentioned that the file appeared after I had downloaded a ged-com. After reading it, it was auto deleted, butit left this other file behind.
I have been useing this version of FTW for about two years so I can't blame the makers.
Yes I do have plenty of spare time on my hands. I've been retired for about ten years and if I didn't play with my toy Ir'd die of boredom.

125911 2003-03-06 04:14:00 Hi Jack.... yes I can confirm xxxxtemp is there and dissapears when FTM is closed down.

Its purpose, I don't know. My guess it is created when you switch FTM on to hold temporary info in use at any particular time or act a a repository for downloaded gedcom files.... but I would say you need xxxxtemp.

125912 2003-03-06 04:15:00 It must have decided that it needs it. :D And it does clean up after itself. If only people were as nice. Graham L (2)
125913 2003-03-06 04:20:00 Only problem is that it has only been there a couple of days. And it shows on the menu with the *.FTW files.
