Of course, banks, telecom, power, all have such onesided terms that they can probably do anything they like, without any notice.

126065 2003-03-07 05:08:00 Direct debits and post-dated cheques are excellent (but if you do go the post-dated cheque route highlight the date with a highlighter or stick a post-it note on it) .

For many years we ran a separate budget account . $x went in every payday to pay specific bills - insurance, power, mortgage, phone . . . Each payday paid a proportion of the year's costs . If I knew something big was coming up - like a kid starting High School (fees, uniforms) - then the figure was upped the year before so the money was there .

Whatever is left over after paying the budget is yours - food, meals out, holidays, saving for a new computer . . . .

126066 2003-03-07 09:56:00 >Prompt payment discounts (offered or asked for ) beat the piddling interest you would earn Danger. Even mean sods like Telecom offer a better discount rate than current interest can earn. Do the sums.<

You missunderstand me Billy. I always pay my bills when they are due, so I do get the prompt payment discounts, but it seems pointless to pay it earlier. When the bill arrives, I program it into my Microsoft Money and then go online and set up the payment for the date it is due. That way the money is sitting in my account earning the piddling interest (which is more than your money is doing sitting in the payee's account). Also like I said, keeps the balance up to combat those bank fees. Maybe you need to redo your sums? :-D

126067 2003-03-07 10:07:00 Even the IRD acknowledge that there are people (such as myself) who send them post-dated cheques (I read a reminder somewhere from them recently that if post-dating make sure you get the last Friday in the month not the last day of the month to avoid penalties) .

Post dating cheques means they are paid on time - and it's someone else's problem to keep them till the due date . Direct debits, where possible, are even better .

A post dated cheque! :D

126069 2003-03-07 10:21:00 >BTW I just got $20 discount on a $200 purchase for paying cash instead of charging. That's 10% interest if you like, tax paid or tax free, whichever flavour you prefer. Your smileage may vary.<

Yeah most places will give a you discount of 10% for cash. Even McDonalds tonight when my order came to over $20.00 and I mumbled that I didn't have enough money as I only had a $20.00 note and pulled out my credit card and the guy said "Oh, just give us 20!" :)

126070 2003-03-07 21:03:00 Ah, the old pocket full of small change trick! Near enough is good enough for some traders . Not quite what you were meaning Danger, and a technique I would not intentionally apply, but it makes me look favourably on retailers who show a touch of humanity & flexibility . Everybody has been 5 cents short at some time or other and some individuals might find it humiliating to be rejected at the checkout . I like and patronise shops that treat their customers as human beings rather than statistics .

However, on the subject of discounts, they have to be looked for and pursued . A posted price is just an "offer to treat" . It is only our Kiwi culture that makes us accept the price tag as a fixed sum, yet we willingly haggle at garage sales, when buying cars etc .

Recently I wanted to purchase a number of new home appliances so rang around my family & friends to see if any were interested in joining in a discount purchasing exercise . Some were, so I prepared a list of products and faxed it to several major appliance stores . Some didn't reply even after a second reminder, some quoted on their floor price only, but two or three got down and dirty to secure the sales .

We ended up with a small truckload and the final savings were significant . Delivering the order to several different addresses was no problem and no charge, and the only drawback was that I had to collect the individual payments in advance and make one payment for the lot . No sweat :D

Moral of the story?

You don't ask, you don't get . :(

Cheers
