| 126363 | 2003-03-07 08:24:00 | Sys Win98 (1st ed), 330 MHz Celeron, 256 odd RAM, Modem Rockwell 33.6 DPF ISA PnP.(older slower modem as 33.6 is the best we can do here and keep the connection up). Well anyway this particular modem has served me well for some years (perhaps it's dead !), but now on trying to connect all I get is the message "The port is already open". I s'pose it must be somfink I did but don't know what. :-( Start-Ctl Panel-Sys-Device manager tells me that all is fine and there are no conflicts ?:- Ctl-Alt-Del and closed Rnnap, replaced modem cable, removed the modem shut down restarted and reinstalled but same answer. At one stage I got the message "Another program is using the device (or at least, words to that effect. What else can I try ? |

Have another closer look for anything else that might be using the modem port with a Ctl-Alt-Del Also try shutting the computer down completely for a few minutes as sometimes a restart does not give sufficient time to clear everything. |

After you close to desktop, restart. If this fails, try re-install of driver. Do you run ad-aware, as you may have picked up something that is trying to see if you are online? How about Nortons AV with live update? Can cause problems. |
