126211 2003-03-07 04:10:00 Have a Compaq EVO D320 PC that came with Windows XP Pro but need to put Win98 on it for a software package that doesn't work in XP

Installed Win98 OK then installed latest Intel INF chipset update. It installs OK then restarts the PC then starts to Find new hardware as normal but then locks up installing the USB controller. After a restart Win98 will no longer load except in Safe Mode.

If I remove the USB controller in Safe Mode the PC will restart and find it again and then lock up again. Have tried a fresh install of Win98 again just in case I did something wrong but same problem.

With XP on it the PC and USB ports worked fine.
Also, I have installed the USB 2.0 drivers and that installs fine.

Anyone got any ideas?

126212 2003-03-07 04:25:00 Its a real possibility that the BIOS may not work with Win 98, if it was supplied with (and optimised for) Win XP.

If this was the case then a BIOS "upgrade" may be hard to find as it would be a "downgrade"

126213 2003-03-07 04:30:00 Are you installing WIN98SE?

Only Win98SE can use USB devices...

Not correct. USB was (partially) useable from Win 95 OSR 2
I installed a USB device last weekend on a W98 PC, works fine
