2003-03-07 03:51:00 I started using a mobile rack to shift hard-drives round a few months back. They have the small 4cm fans and the front one in particular is getting very noisy. I have taken it out, cleaned out all the dust etc and tried a little sewing machine lube oil. This worked for a while and now it's back....should I keep doing the same or maybe use graphite or similar? I don't want to keep replacing them! wattie (613)
2003-03-07 03:53:00 you can try oiling it again (inox is very good) but the odds are the bearing is shot. go buy some decent fans. tweak'e (174)
2003-03-07 03:58:00 Depends. Some fans are cheap. Some are "cheap". Are they sleeve bearing, or ball bearing? I prefer the "Molyslip" type lubricants myself.

Those very small fans are probably quite variable in quality. They're used and last well in some 3Com network gear I've seen ... perhaps they get high quality ones. I don't think some of the CPU cooler fans that size I've seen are as good. ;-)

2003-03-07 04:19:00 Do what I do. Disconnect the tray fans, after all if the hard drives were not in the retractable tray they wouldn't have fans. There should be plug/socket each side of the caddy inside the HDD compartment about the middle (if they are the common type of caddy) , just pull them apart. godfather (25)
