126156 2003-03-07 02:12:00 I find Panicware's (free) popup stopper hopeless. The popup merchants seem to have found out how to get round it.

Looking in PressF1 for mention of one, I find a reference to Mozilla having one as an integral feature of the browser, but it doesn't seem to be available in the version I have (1.3a).

Can anyone tell me how to start it up, or advise an independent and preferably free popup stopper that works 100% or near 100%.

126157 2003-03-07 02:20:00 To improve your browsing experience, try Phoenix.
Based on the Mozilla engine, its kinda like its little brother!

Do a google search for:
Download Phoenix Nightly
And you'll come up with this link:
ftp.mozilla.org

Built in pop-up stopper, havent had a single one since I used it! Its excellent!

Also, the great thing is that apart from it crashing a whole lot less than all the IE browsers Ive used, it doesnt take down explorer with it when it does (On the once in a blue moon occasion it does).

Try it out, I dare ya!

You'll be pleasantly surprised!

Cheers

126158 2003-03-07 03:47:00 Its been in mozilla for ages, including 1.3a which I'm currently using.

Have a look under edit -> preferences -> advanced -> scripts & plugins.

I have the first 5 things unchecked (open unrequested windows, move&resize windows, raise lower windows, hide status bar, change status bar text).

The mozilla/galeon/konqueror/phoenix blocker is better that most blockers becuase it only blocks "unrequested" windows so most sites that need popups to work (eg ANZ) still work. And its built in so you don't have to bother with 3rd party proxys etc.

126159 2003-03-07 03:51:00 Yes.. Phoenix's is turned on by default.

I made one a while back with a friend...

It scanned the blue bar along the top of the window.. If it contained any of the text specified... It'd kill the window.

Useful for not just IE popups, but other proggy's too...

Might still have a copy somewhere... ;-) Should dig it up :p

126160 2003-03-07 04:20:00 You could try The Proxomitron, which was recommended in a PC World article ages ago.

It blocks pop ups, ads, scripts etc - you can do quite a lot of configuring to suit your own purposes.

You can find it at http://www.proxomitron.org/

126164 2003-03-07 23:00:00 I notice that their is a free version of AdSubtract on ZDNet's website. It is called AdSubtract SE 1.68. Haven't tried it, but it may be worth trying before going to the Pro version. There is a user opinion on the site that says the free version is better because it is less invasive than the Pro version.

126165 2003-03-07 23:12:00 Since I've been using Opera with the pop-up stopper activated pop-ups are no longer an issue.
