126535 2003-03-08 03:54:00 I seem to need Safe Mode to defrag. What do you reckon is the best way to enter Safe Mode using Win 98 SE? Sorry for my previous posting asking for Edit Mode instead of Safe mode.
Thanks Geeks.

126536 2003-03-08 04:01:00 I think it is the "shift" key or the "ctrl" key, I am not too sure. butIf you look under Windows help:

Start > Help,
and typed in “ Safe Mode ”it should be able to tell you

Hope this helps

126537 2003-03-08 04:03:00 Hi

Boot up and hit (several times as necessary) the F8 key before/as windows is starting up. You will see a screen with several choises 1. Normal 2. Safe Mode, etc, use arrow keys to go to safe mode and hit enter. Or........ Go to Start > Shut Down and choose Restart in Safe Mode.

Cheers

126539 2003-03-08 10:53:00 It's either hold down the [shift] key or [ctrl] key whilst turning it on until you get to a DOS prompt (can't remember which) or

A second method is to continuously tap [F8] really fast until the DOS screen appears. This method has been known to lead to a number of swear words, a reboot and retry tapping faster.

126540 2003-03-08 23:45:00 My grateful thanks to you all for your help. What a great service you all provide for people like me in constant trouble. Just about makes me feel sane again. Holding Ctrl while booting is the answer for my PC.. I ran out of swear words using F8.
God bless,
dumb-bell.

126541 2003-03-09 02:11:00 Sorry about your frustration with the f8 key. It was the way I was first showed how to access the start options and have never got out of the habit and used the better alternatives for some reason.

Cheers

126542 2003-03-09 02:17:00 Hi Murray,

There are usually several ways of doing one task. Unfortunately often the common well known ways are the most frustrating!

126543 2003-03-09 02:18:00 The "correct" way used to be to press F8 while the system is saying "Loading Windows ...". If you don't catch that (probably very small, now) time window, it doesn't work. Thus the bad language. :D Graham L (2)
