126517 2003-03-08 05:13:00 Hi Beetle

I should have been clearer. In your Display Properties > Settings tab click on the Advanced button, its bootom right just above the Apply button.

Tell us what it says in there. There should be several tab'ed boxes named: General, Adapter, Monitor, Trouble Shooting and Colour Management. There may be ather tab'ed boxes in adavnced settings as well depending on your video adapter or what drivers/utilities are installed on your computer. Let us know waht the settings are and what info/options are available.

Alternatively, go to Control Panel and double click the display icon for the same set of tabs.

Cheers

126519 2003-03-08 05:55:00 ok. Looks like generic windows drivers are loaded for your video adapter, do you have a card or on board adapter and what brand or chipset is it. I was hoping you would have something more under colour management or better still a colour correction tab. Got any buttons or knobs on the monitor, anywhere?

If we can find out what card or chipset is used to run your video/graphics you may be able to download updated drivers or a manufcturers utility which can be used to make the adustments you require. NVidia have a set of utilities bundled with which you can tweak all sorts of graphics variable for eg.

126520 2003-03-08 07:32:00 >>>3 (1) why is the picture not square? and when put things up open on page why are they not all veiwable, my tray is really long and my clock has gone off the screen and when i move the page the other side goes off

>>>3 (2) brightness is at 100% and contrast is 100%

Hi Beetle, with regard to your picture not being square and viewable and not being able to see your clock - as Murray said, IF you have a knob/button actually on your Monitor, there are settings in there to get your picture squared up again and back in alignment (takes a bit of fiddling somtimes if it gets out of sync) . Sometimes you have to press the button in then move it around to each different setting in there .

When you say the brightness and contrast are at 100% - is that using the monitor knob setting i was talking about above? Does it help if you bring these settings down a bit? My brightness is at about 68% .

**Note - as to how this happens, well I have had this problem twice after a visit from my young nephew (a case of little fingers playing with knobs i think ;-) )

Anyway hope this is of some help to you :-)

Also it may not hurt to tell us what brand is on the monitor .

126521 2003-03-08 07:34:00 Went for dinner Murray .

beetle, were you altering setting here & there before this happened, or were you deleting files directly from explorer or some other hazardous activity?

Murray is thinking that you have lost your video driver files so your computer has reverted to generic windows drivers . It could be that, or it could be other things . I don't use XP so I can't really help much . The Hz setting won't make much difference but you can set it up to 75 Hz if you feel like it .

From the sound of it most of the things we might want to do from here on could be outside your experience . Do you have a restore disk that came with the computer when you bought it? If you do, I'd back up any critical data to CD (if you have a CD-RW or to any other medium if you don't) then restore .

Otherwise take the time to write your problems out a little more clearly (do this in notepad then paste it into the F1 window when finished) and maybe an XP expert will come along tonight or tomorrow and give you some step by step instructions . Either that or take it in for correction by professionals .

One last point, don't set contrast and brightness to maximum, it won't do your monitor any good . Back the contrast off a bit then lower the brightness to get a better looking pix . The focus FAQ has instructions on how to set these controls properly if you are interested .

Cheers

126522 2003-03-08 08:32:00 Hi Beetle,
I have a PC company computer too so I'm guessing here that your monitor is the same as mine. It sounds like your horizontal & vertical are out of line.
If you press on either of the arrows above the on/off button that will bring up a box & you can navigate around all the different positions & using the + or - button will slightly bring into line what you need to change.

126523 2003-03-08 09:08:00 ok im back been away for what seems like hours,

monitor is pc company, thats what it says ok! ( i said it before)
but when i take contrast and briteness down i feel as though i need to turn on the lite switch, its too dark. way too dark my lites are brighter and they only 60 watts.

my picture has got better, not sure how i did that, i did a restart earlier to see if went back to original settings and it seems fine except for the colour. still doesnt seem quite square but good enuf.
but now in saying that my screen has a picture frame of black round the edges, is that normal?
i upped the hertz thing.

ok i dont remember what else you asked for will check

126524 2003-03-08 09:19:00 Hi again Beetle,
Did you read my post above about your horizontal & vertical settings?
I have a black border too around the edges but if I make the viewable area any bigger then I lose the close button & sometimes the start button too & that is not what you want to happen.

126526 2003-03-08 12:25:00 Hi Bettle

Is it grey like washed out? or is grey as in your window/boxes borders are grey in colour? You mentioned earlier that you changed fonts to look larger, did you perhaps change something else. Where in windows did you make the change(s) from? Have you installed any programs (or a site maybe) that have asked for particular colour or graphics settings?

As mentioned earlier its helfull to write things down for those helping and it may bring something to mind for you as you retrace your steps. Invariabley if I don't note changes I make they turn to you know what :( but then I've got F1 to fall back on :)

Cheers
