1331475 2013-03-05 21:16:00 Might be a corrupt driver, probably the video driver. If you press ctrl-alt-del do you get task manager?? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1331476 2013-03-05 21:59:00 Update,
rebooted - it went to windows recovery - did some repair & booted
didn't recognize the new graphics card
went to device manager - updated the video driver from the cd
booted just fine once
reboot back to black screen white arrow
ctrl+alt+del gets nothing

1331477 2013-03-05 22:09:00 Could be several things, like corrupted drivers or damaged reg Settings .

Check this if you can boot into safe mode - Open regedit, navigate to:

HKEY_local machine/software/microsoft/WindowsNT/Currentversion/winlogon .

Click on the winlogon folder - on the right hand panel click on shell .

The data value should only be explorer . exe

If theres anything else apart from explorer . exe, (double click it) open the setting and remove the other values so only explorer . exe remains .

Reboot .

1331478 2013-03-05 22:15:00 Is this windows 8 and a Nvidia card?....there is a known issue where windows update on win8 updates the driver and if you install the latest drivers an reboot, the config files point to the older drivers causing the black screen...

oops, missed that it was Win7....I would boot to safe, uninstall the driver, reboot, download latest from the web site and install

1331479 2013-03-05 23:35:00 wainuitech: all good as should be in registry NZHawk (4093)
1331480 2013-03-05 23:52:00 Very high chance its Drivers then as its been suggested . Simply putting in New ones over the top of old sometimes wont work .

Download and run Driversweeper (hopefully :) ) a direct link download ( . guru3d . com/index . php?ct=files&action=download&" target="_blank">www . guru3d . com) First run the normal uninstall for the graphics, reboot, then run Driversweeper, select your graphic Drivers, and remove them .

Note:If you cant boot normally after running the uninstall do it in safe mode- Then it should boot, THEN install Fresh .

The fact that its booting in Safe mode usually indicates faulty Graphics ( but not always) can also be a failing Card .

1331481 2013-03-06 00:36:00 booted to safe mode
deleted the driver through device manager
rebooted to normal modem
deleted AMD Radeon Control Centre & all drivers...
ran Drive Sweeper successful
rebooted to a black screen white arrow head

n/b this is a new graphics card

1331482 2013-03-06 00:57:00 Try another slot if there's a spare one Speedy Gonzales (78)
1331483 2013-03-06 01:05:00 Hmmmmmmmm OK try this - Do a Clean boot - Start in safe mode - Click Start, type in msconfig -

On the General Tab - Select Selective Startup - Untick Load Startup Items check box.

Go to the Services Tab - Down the bottom, tick Hide All Microsoft Services check box.

What you should now be left with is a list of programs/Services with unticked check boxes.

Click Apply, OK reboot.

You can also try booting from a W7 DVD, and select "Repair Your Computer" Choose Start-Up Repair.

If it still wont boot normally, restart in safe mode, run chkdsk if you haven't already.

If it does Boot OK go back into msconfig, services and retick one at a time, rebooting between ticks, sooner or later one should case it to stop again - thats more then likely the problem driver / program.

Is this thing likely to have Malware on it ? Some will change the permissions and wont allow it to start

This may help: or not windows-7-boots-to-black-screen-with-cursor (answers.microsoft.com) OR community.spiceworks.com
