If you are intending to install Windows 8 on older hardware, referring to socket 775 CPU's, (have not tried with AMD's) just be careful before forking out your $$$$$ Some older hardware WONT work with Windows 8 RTM. Had this happen on two different Workshop PC's today. Both ran the Preview editions fine, but doing a install of the RTM, it failed, with the Error code of 5D. If you get a code 5D blue screen error that means then your CPU doesn’t supports NX capabilities. Some motherboards have in the BIOS, this option disabled, so by enabling it, then all will work, if the Motherboard doesn't have the option, its tough luck - to old. MS made the claim that if the PC will run Windows 7 it will run Windows 8 -- WRONG --- they changed the rules. The Developer Preview allowed you to install it on incompatible hardware but some programs crashed, so MS changed it so now it wont. So if you're running the preview, don't assume it will work with RTM. :2cents: |

2012-10-10 04:47:00 | The socket 775 PC I've got runs Windows 8 RTM just fine, and it's got a rather old Pentium 4 in it... | pcuser42 (130) | |
2012-10-10 04:52:00 | Yep already struck this with some work PCs and one from home so Win8 will not be tested.. | paulw (1826) | |
2012-10-10 04:53:00 | I'm guessing it's a motherboard compatibility issue not a CPU issue? | icow (15313) | |
2012-10-10 04:53:00 | Yep, some do some don't. I'm using an older P4 socket 775 right now for testing and it works perfectly. Haven't tried the old media center yet, as the RTM doesn't currently have Media Center, and won't be available till 16th, that's running the Preview.
