1305190 2012-10-05 04:04:00 I bet we all have a few boxes of old parts.

I often wonder about trying to sell some to make some room and generate some cash.

But I wonder if it is worth the effort listing it on TM.

Stuff is so cheap these days.

1305191 2012-10-05 04:16:00 I've bought several things off members in the past. My old graphics card, for example. Have sold Linux distros too, back in the day before everybody had ADSL.

To be honest I kind of like the idea of having a board that is invisible unless you have over 20, 50 or 100 posts. Enough to keep those who are "unaware" out ;) No fees, just straight person-to-person trading and negotiating :)

Lets be honest, you'll get told pretty damn quick if you're asking too high of a price for something around here :D

Though there's the issue of moderation, that I think is the elephant in the room...

1305192 2012-10-05 05:19:00 If the current moderators didn't want the job I'm sure some of the supporters of the idea could do it, only getting permission to moderate the trade board of course, nothing else.

I'd be interested, provided I wasn't doing it alone.

1305193 2012-10-05 05:45:00 Dunno if we have enough volume to warrant it. I'm personally cool with the occasional thread cropping up in the Chat Forum about buy / sell/ wanted. Should run it past Zara and get her thoughts though, she kinda has final say :D Chilling_Silence (9)
1305194 2012-10-05 05:49:00 IN regards to all those who mentioned TradeMe... unless I am mistaken; TradeMe is an auction site. Nowhere did I mention auctions

as an example of what I mean: Joe Blo has a CPU he wants to sell. He puts a post up in the forum with an approximate price he wants. John Doe sees the post and wants the part. Any further dealings between John and Joe may happen in PM (esp address and bank a/c details), and if the part gets sold, Joe may want to put a post up and says item is sold. The only moderation that the site admins may have to do is lock the thread.

Likewise Joe wants to buy a part. He puts a post up, John sees the post, thinks "hmm I have one of those I don't want anymore" and sends a PM/post to Joe and so on...

As with any second hand part you buy (on and off-line) it is buyer beware. As mentioned, if you want to deal with someone who joined today; go for it. If you want to buy second hand parts that wainuitech has been accumulating at the back of his shop - thats all good ... and I don't see why anyone with a business can't sell of their second-hand parts

The site I was thinking of is geekzone - they have a buy/sell forum as well

Just figured it might be a good thing for the site ..
Myth (110)
1305195 2012-10-05 06:00:00 There are enough buy / sell / trade sites around to satisfy anybody, and no shortage of items to buy. A PF1 buy/sell forum would be a limited interest, limited scope, marketplace and be a bit too much like 'insider trading' as well. Nobody would want to pay a commercial price, and a lot of second-hand computer stuff is potentially a liability. It is bad enough on TM but at least there are enough bidders out there to eventually find a buyer.

So, why mess with a working model? It could make things difficult for Fairfax and could spell the end of PF1, so IMHO this site should stick to its roots and its core business! It does that exceptionally well, and you fiddle with it at your own risk.

Cheers

1305196 2012-10-05 06:21:00 The end of PF1 - how terrible :( ChazTheGeek (16619)
1305197 2012-10-05 06:48:00 I believe it makes sense. say you have a pit of hardware you want to give away or sell you can list it instead of waiting until someone asks for it, thus making it easier to both of those involved. The website is about helping people with their computer related problems (or at least partly is) and i fail to see how selling pieces of hardware or software is not doing just that. I also dont really think it matters that its a limited market the point is to speed up the process of helping people. for instance i needed some ram a few days ago and posted asking where i could find it and got offers of people to donate the ram which is very nice, but if say you wanted to get rid of some old ram it would be quicker to put up a thread and it doesn't make sense to do it in the Pf1 forum because it will just get pushed down due to limited interest. How about a 6 month wait as well as a certain post count before one can see the forum?

As I see it, this forum's regular community is pretty small, do we really need another forum?

I remember a while ago it was mentioned that long-term members could ask you guys for permission and post items for sale. Should stay that way, IMO.

Not everything is an auction...

I would say the likes of geekzone or gpforums have a much larger user-base than we do. There is a great deal of posts in PressF1 from transients, one question and they're off...
