1305170 2012-10-04 22:14:00 Sounds like a good idea but we already use the PC world chat forum for this.
LOL, Metla a moderator :D

1305171 2012-10-04 22:22:00 People sell stuff in pcworld chat? I've only ever seen maybe a handful of things given away. icow (15313)
1305172 2012-10-04 22:23:00 Whoops, I meant that. ChazTheGeek (16619)
1305173 2012-10-04 22:29:00 As ChazTheGeek points out, it's already being done in chat, a separate forum would simply make it official.

Hosted on the PF1 board it wouldn't need to sustain itself.

1305174 2012-10-04 22:32:00 Personally I feel it would be like any other place (hussle live, even trademe) If you got something off plod, chaz or wainui I'm fairly confident they'd be honest. I mean, most of the stuff we'd be selling is things like PCI adapters, bits of RAM and HDD's. I don't see anyone selling "fake" iPhones on here trying to turn a quick buck.

If you buy off some little twit with 3x posts bad english and get a steal of a deal well lucky you. If you get a lump of wood in the mail I can't say you weren't asking for it!

Haha, I remember the Metla moderator thread.

If I had time (I don't, exams :() I'd set up a site where PF1 members could list items they had and were willing to sell, just a listing though eg Wainui might have:

80GB WD IDE HDD
120GB Seagate IDE HDD
PCI SATA Controller
Linksys 10/100 Ethernet NIC

All you'd do is click on the link and offer/request a price and arrange shipping. Also allow people to list what they were looking for (eg NickG might be looking for 2nd hand android phone) so if a member was selling/upgrading they could easily see that there was another lad around here who wanted such a device and could offer it up.

Would be easier and cleaner than trying to put it into a forum and also wouldn't have the issue (if it's an issue) of being directly associated/managed by PF1 and fairfax. Only thing that might be needed to tie it together is access to PF1's VB MySQL and PHP database to log users in and out/authenticate PF1 members from imposters. If course it wouldn't be too hard to do each member manually by posing a security question eg for plod: Were you surprised with my timecapsule? or just sending a PM to the member with an auth code.

Wishful thinking anyway. If people think its a good idea it could be a good project for some of our aspiring coders (and experianced coders) to produce this. I can do CSS/HTML and very basic PHP (I'm rather poor at intelligent coding, whether due to lack of skill or lack of practice I don't know haha) but the UI would be no problem.

1305175 2012-10-04 22:32:00 Not everyone is such as a prodigious contributor as you, Nick
If you read my post, I said 'or if you have been around since dec 2004. Also, I mentioned being able to ask a mod to let you in if you do not meet either of those.

1305176 2012-10-04 22:32:00 The new Forum would make things official as Agent_24 said. I think it draw more attention to these forums.
You can call me Chaz. :)

1305177 2012-10-04 22:33:00 I dont mind seeing the odd pre-loved part being sold, or stuff being given away , but not in favour of a full-on buy/sell/trade type forum. I dont believe its what this site is about. Iantech (16386)
1305178 2012-10-04 22:35:00 Yup. Right you are. ChazTheGeek (16619)
