2013-03-07 02:16:00 | I'm never sure how much I can safely say on this type of topic, work makes me privvy to some information that I'm not allowed to share or at least would have to run past some kind of legal or PR guy first (No I don't work for Chorus but a company that has a close business relationship with them). Because of this I won't look into details for a specific case or give any specific information. All I can suggest is basically what Chill said, keep at them. It's the squeaky wheel that gets the grease and all that. There are people somewhere in chorus who can look at the statistics for loading on any given cabinet and make the decision as to whether an upgrade is justified or perhaps add some additional backhaul as I hinted at earlier. If it's already running at capacity and needs upgrading, then it has to wait until they have the budget for it and will be one of many so it still could take some time. One of the factors (although far from the only one) that starts the upgrade process is customer feedback. Network growth and spending make seem slow from the outside but it's going on constantly. Sometimes the reason for poor performance can be that a future upgrade is planned so they have stopped spending money upgrading the old equipment. Conklins are not the best, but in a small cabinet with not too many broadband users they are still pretty good and many times better than dialup. Bear in mind that the best dialup speed possible equates to .056 Mbps. They were a cheap solution for remote cabinets without many customers and they worked well, since they were installed broadband usage has increased as has individual bandwidth requirements. Conklins are nearing the end of their service, no new ones have been installed except to expand where exisiting ones already are for quite some years now. I don't think anyone regrets installing them, just realises that they are perhaps no longer sufficient.

2013-03-07 11:09:00 | Thanks dugimodo and chillin. At least I start to understand whats going on. More likely the conklin has been oversubscribed in last few months. With all those big nice plans every ISP is offering no wonder. I am rural so possibly there is no enough demand for Chorus to consider upgrading the hardware and equipment. They might have already increased the backhaul to the max but I can say it is going worse since 2 months so maybe a few more users have been added. I was already informed no upgrades were planned in the near future. If this is the case my best bet is to get a repeater and connect with NetSmart. It will give me autonomy and independance. I needed to understand better what was going on and chances for resolution to make a decision and it doesnt seem there will be any. I will let you know of the outcome of the tech visit tomorrow. | Osmose (17026) | |
2013-03-07 18:47:00 | No, not specifically. If its *that* oversubscribed it shows there is a real, and an existing need for something more than is currently on offer. If I was you I wouldn't give up, keep pushing for am upgrade! | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2013-03-08 00:36:00 | Allright the Chorus tech has come and confirmed what has been said there. I am on a conklin minidslam offering 7 Mbps download and 0.80Mbps upload. There is the conklin cabinet 500m from my house and from the conklin box to the home net users it is fibre. From the road to the house it is the old phone cable that connect us to that fibre. From the conklin box to the exchange its is copper wire. 5 years ago there were 10 people on the conklin today there are 36 with 5 who were added in the past 2 months. There is oversubscription for sure and backhaul problem because of the copper wire to the exchange. To improve internet, fibre would have to be lay from the exchange and the conklin cabinet changed. They are not going to do it for 36 customers. The exchange is over 12 km from the conklin cabinet. The tech seemed to say also more likely no more people are going to be added since it is rural and more or less all the people who were able to be connected have now internet. With the big net plans on offer from ISPss people let downloads running all day while they are at work as well. Really a conklin is not designed for heavy users or many people. I will continue to push the issue through my ISP but i dont think Chorus is going to do anything about it. It is not economical for them. I am going for the repeater and NetSmart but will keep a small plan with the current provider. Thanks everybody.

2013-03-08 01:28:00 | You should probably just dump them and tell them in no uncertain terms why | Agent_24 (57) | |
2013-03-08 19:22:00 | Yeah sounds like there's no easy solution in the short term. Bear in mind though the "chorus" tech is actually a contractor and doesn't work directly for chorus. If you look at the vehicles you'll see another company logo as well as the chorus one. They know the network and equipment very well but have no real say on what chorus will or won't do, so the idea they won't upgrade it for 36 people while probably true is an opinion and not a fact. | dugimodo (138) | |
