126943 2003-03-09 21:12:00 Greetings,

A friend of mine went to the crickinfo.com site to get an update on how the cricket was going, and was assailed by pop-ups, pop-unders and general nasties.

Normally, advertising doesn't worry me, but this site is ridiculous!

The problem is now when she opens a web-based application or a browser window, she's getting pop-ups gallore.

I've run a check for Gator, thinking it might have been that, but nothing.

Can anyone suggest what else it may be and if possible a fix for how to get rid of it. I'm not interested in ad-blocking software - in my experience they cause more problems than they solve (that's going to be unpopular). I just want to get rid of the pop-ups.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

Cheers

126945 2003-03-09 21:21:00 Try SpyBot. I had a persistent pop-up from visiting a site once, and the only thing which got rid of it was running SpyBot and cleaning out all the altered registry entries and cookies. Ad-Aware don't seem to detect things like that, but SpyBot does a reasonably good job at cleaning them out. You may, however, want to uninstall SpyBot once you've used it, because I have heard that it is actually Spyware itself (go figure). honeylaser (814)
126946 2003-03-09 21:23:00 PS - SpyBot can be found here (security.kolla.de/)
You may also want to install Popup Stopper (www.panicware.com/). Don't know how I'd surf without it!

126947 2003-03-09 21:27:00 Thanx for the quick response honeylaser - the URL you've given is giving me a 404 Error message - will do a search on Google.

Also, do you know of anything that's not ad-blocking software that could possibly fix this? The computer concerned is a work PC, so don't want to load any extra software - especially ad-blocking software.

Sorry to be a pain.

You could disable Javascript.

In IE Tools > Internet Options > Security > Internet > Custom Level and Uncheck Javascript.

Keep in mind this disables Javascript within web pages also. It's a pretty easy and effective way to stop pop ups and pop unders though.

126950 2003-03-10 00:33:00 Thanx for this, but I'm not wanting to stop the ads. I just want to stop whatever executable or app that is causing the problem. Like Gator causes on most machines.

Well, Spybot and AdAware will do that for you. But you have to install these programs to get rid of the Spyware/Adware. If pop ups in general are an issue, then you can install a popup stopper such as the one from Panicware, or you can disable Javascript in the browser.

126952 2003-03-10 02:11:00 I can view the page with only one small pop-up.

try checking the system with Ad-aware from www.lavasoft.de
