127166 2003-03-10 21:44:00 Hi all,
I have connected to my isp via another pc/modem as my external modem seems to be having a problem. It dials out and then sounds like it retries the handshaking process a couple of times and then gives up. Can modems develop faults like this i.e. is the modem for the rubbish?

Cheers

127168 2003-03-10 22:53:00 The thing is it has been working fine for months, then on the odd occasion of have noticed the retries. I haven't changed any settings (famous last words - :D) that I can think of. Its actually a Merz 336 (33.6k) external. Of course Clear may have changed one (or more) of their settings which has caused my modem to retry. The modem I am using to connect for this session is also a 33.6 but internal in a Linux box. It connected fine with no retries what so ever. Actually I have resisted calling Clear as they will say "What is your platform".... "Linux".... "oh we don't support that - you are on your own". 127169 2003-03-11 02:49:00 Of course modems can fail. :D Have a look at the log files and see what it is saying during the negotiation. Is there more "noise" on the line? Ther can be a considerable difference in the ability of different modems to cope with noise. Graham L (2)
127170 2003-03-11 06:24:00 Well its going again. Connected it to one of my Windows pc's and it connected fine. Plugged it back into my Linux gateway box and it connected fine. Well I'm confused... Dolby Digital (160)
