127569 2003-03-12 08:42:00 Hi, I will be coming to New Zealand with an American laptop which has an internal modem and a standard American RJ11 telephone plug.

What telephone plug do you use in NZ? Will I need a special adapter to connect the laptop to a New Zealand plug?

I've heard that hotels provide whatever is necessary, but I'll be staying in a private home.

Thanks, Julie

127570 2003-03-12 08:58:00 DSE (www.dse.co.nz) has US Modular RJ11 To BT socket converters for sale. utopia (2200)
127571 2003-03-12 09:01:00 We use a BT type plug and you can get adaptors here to suit the US RJ11 plugs. This site shows you what they look like.

The other problem is that our electricity supply is 240Volt 50Hz instead of 110Volt 60Hz as in the US. Check that you laptop power pack will handle this. You will probably need an adaptor for the plug also.

127572 2003-03-12 20:07:00 Hi Julie

I'm not 100% sure as I don't use dial up anymore, but I think you may have to change the dialling settings for your modem while you are here as well. I think our ringing cadence is different to the US and your modem might not recognise the ringing signal when the ISP is replying.

It will help if your laptop is a recognised brand with an international instruction manual. Look in the Asia-Pacific region and if New Zealand isn't listed, use Australia's settings as they are the same.

To avoid messing up your home settings, set up a new dial-out profile before you leave and configure as much as you can before heading off. It is a good idea to sort all this out before you come so that you know what changes to make when you arrive as there will probably be a lot of other distractions once you get here.

Cheers

P.S. If I have given any misleading or unclear advice above, you can bet that corrections will be posted very quickly by one or more of our regular contributors with US/NZ experience. It would probably help if you posted your laptop brand name and model, and tell us what OS (operating system) you are using as well.
