127553 2003-03-12 07:28:00 I dunno if Lycoris setup has anything to do with this... but it wont begin, It gets to something like "Starting LIZARD Lycoris install Wizard" and hangs after a minute or two :(

I dunno if this has anything to do with it, but its the only thing that's not really working fully at the moment on my system (Im comfortable with it enough now, that RedHat 8 is the default, as opposed to my 2K/XP Boot loader).

Basically, Ive got my onboard AC '97 soundcard, which isnt all that great, or my SB!Live PCI soundcard which can really pump out some good sounds.

How do I change it in Linux so that it uses my SB!Live and not my onboard.

Ive also got NZ_Liam's problem, where I type sndconfig as my user or root and it doesnt work.. comes up saying that command is invalid. How rude!

Anyways, any suggestions/comments much appreciated.

Thanks

BTW - Just for the record, the Lycoris and SB!Live is my PC, and the A4Tech mouse is for the Family's PC.. I installed redhat this avo! :D

Thanks guys

127554 2003-03-12 07:32:00 Can't you disable the onboard sound in your BIOS?

That way Linux shouldn't be able to pick it up if it's disabled.

127555 2003-03-12 07:36:00 Yeah, I can, but it has a big moaning session... It'll turn it off and everything, but then linux moans about it cant initialise the sound output or something... and I use it sometimes in doze anyways. Chilling_Silence (9)
127556 2003-03-12 07:45:00 When you say that sndconfig doesn't work at root - are you in a complete root shell or have you "su"ed to root? To get the full environment of root you need to use "su -". JohnD (509)
127557 2003-03-12 07:47:00 Can't you only have one sound card active at a time? YOu do need to diable the on-board one if you are using a PCI card. JohnD (509)
127558 2003-03-12 07:49:00 I dont know how to switch between sound-cards... that's my point :-) Chilling_Silence (9)
127559 2003-03-12 07:54:00 Not sure what you mean "switch between sound cards"? Disabling on-board means that Linux should detect the PCI card ........? JohnD (509)
127560 2003-03-12 08:01:00 Only its already detected the SB!Live

How do i get linux to use the SB!Live though.

In doze i can simply tell it to use the SB!Live as my preffered device, how do I do it in linux?

And yes... when I go
su -
it works with sndconfig
but when I go
su
it doesnt?
What does the little - do?

Thanks for your help :-)

127561 2003-03-12 08:10:00 I would have thought if it has successfully detected the sound card and you heard the sounds generated by sndconfig as part of the setup, it should just go!!

The su - gives access the the path statement for root so you dont have to type the full pathway to run the program - e.g. /sbin/sndconfig

127562 2003-03-12 08:12:00 BTW - the place to disable the onboard sound card is normally a jumper on the motherboard in my experience. JohnD (509)
