127456 2003-03-12 00:56:00 Hi ya.

This might sound like a silly question to some but this stuff is all new to me.

Ive finally got hold of the PC World Mag with the CD for SP1 on it. It says "make a back up of data and systems files prior to installing this programme"

How do I do that? Do I need to buy CD's for this - if so which ones?

Also once I download the SP1 - what do I need to do then - does it do auto updates or do I do them manually. Also when do they bring out a new version.

Thanks for any info

127457 2003-03-12 00:59:00 Sorry forgot to say I have Windows XP - Home Edition Ladybug (3129)
127458 2003-03-12 01:05:00 save any critical data to cd, floppy, zip etc in case something goes wrong with the sp1 update.

if i remeber correctly when you run the sp1 update it will make a restore point so you can go back to pre sp1 if it fails.]

copy the sp1 update of the cd and run it. all updates are in it. after sp1 is successfully installed then do your normal windows updates. there are a few newer ones you may need to get.

Have a look here:
www.microsoft.com

This will answer most of your question & tell you a wee bit about why you need Win XP SP1

Also if you run windows update http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ it will tell you that you need SP 1 & what other patches / fixes you need.

127462 2003-03-12 04:23:00 Also you might want to have a read here: grc.com

About why you really need win XP SP1

Also http://grc.com/ is a good place to test your computers Internet security & also this site will tell you a bit about Internet security etc….

I hope this helps

Stuart.

127464 2003-03-12 05:20:00 Hey Stu, your first link does not work. Try this page here (www.microsoft.com) to get there. Do have a look at that page for a good explanation of SP1, Ladybug and Beetle.

In a nutshell:

> why do we need it
To fix up security "holes" discovered since Win XP was first released and improve compatibility with some hardware/software.

> what does it do ?
As above.

> why does it slow the machine down?
Sometimes it does, sometimes it does not. You probably will not notice any difference.

> how do you tell if its working?
You should not really notice any difference. You will know if it is NOT working if your computer starts playing up and you have done nothing else. This is unlikely however.

> and why do we still need upgrades if this thing is so flash?
To keep the bad guys out of your computer!!

> It says "make a back up of data and systems files prior to installing this programme" How do I do that? Do I need to buy CD's for this - if so which ones?

Do you have a CD writer? If you do, then backup (ie, save) all the documents you have created to a CD. Go to the FAQ section (link top right of this page) and follow the instructions in FAQ #7.

> Also once I download the SP1 - what do I need to do then
You read the instructions on the CD and then install the SP1 on your computer.

> does it do auto updates or do I do them manually.
I would have thought your computer should actually be doing the updates automatically already. If it is not then you can set it to do so after you have installed SP1. If you need help with this come back and start a new thread for it.

> Also when do they bring out a new version.
New updates are brought out whenever required, eg when a new security threat is discovered and fixed. New Service Packs are brought out when Microsoft feel like it.
