127391 2003-03-11 19:37:00 Acer have a Travelmate 233X for about $2650+GST which is a Celeron 2GHz laptop. Also has a DVD/CDRW combo drive. Has Windows XP Pro, 256MB, network card, 56k modem and 2x USB 2.0 ports. CYaBro (73)
127392 2003-03-11 20:14:00 Hey there (and welcome to PF1)

Have a look-see at this thread here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) for some opinions on laptop brands.

I still stand by my opinion that the Compaq Evos are the best value for money - especially the n1020v's. I quoted one yesterday for someone who couldn't afford to spend too much, and still couldn't believe how cheap they are! Plus you get a DVD drive standard in most of them. Models like the 470051-311 (which is an Evo n1020v P4 2.0Ghz / 256MB Ram / 30GB HDD / 14.1" TFT / DVD / NIC / XPP) are great value. They retail at just over $3000 + GST.

127393 2003-03-12 01:41:00 Following on from honeylaser's points, I notice on Gamma Computers NZ website, they are selling the Compaq Evo 1020v for $3390 plus GST. The specs are:
Intel P4 2.4Ghz processor with 512k cache
40Gb Hard disk drive
DVD-ROM / CD Writer Combo Drive , FDD
15" XGA TFT screen with ATI Radeon IGP 340M ( Shared 32Mb DDR SDRAM )
Integrated 56Kbps modem & 10/100 Ethernet
Integrated JBL Pro speakers 16 bit stereo sound
PORTS: 1 parallel, 2 USB, PS/2 Keyboard/mouse, Headphone in/out, 4Mb IrDA, IEEE 1394 ( Firewire ), S-video out port
One type II PC Card slot supports both 32-bit Cardbus & 16-bit PC Card
8-cell Lithium-Ion battery
Choice of touchpad with 4-way scroll or pointstick
DVD Playback Software, Roxio Easy CD creator
Windows XP Professional

I see it even includes a CD writer.

127394 2003-03-12 02:46:00 Please note that a certain distributor who I won't name are selling ex lease n1020v notebooks to certain resellers, who are going on to advertise these laptops as new. They look like a bargain ($3050), but they aren't worth the hassle. Make sure to ask and ensure that they are brand new if you decide to buy one. honeylaser (814)
