Why were you emailing them? If it was job applications, businesses generally don't reply to them (unless you're us, and nice people).

I found in the past that there are some businesses out there who obviously don't want my business, as I never got responses. I tend to just move on and email the next one who may appreciate my custom! If you don't hear back from them in two or three days, go somewhere else! 5 is just ridiculous.

Oh, as an afterthought - try to send emails to a person (joe_bloggs@companyname.co.nz) rather than a generic email address (ie enquiries@companyname.co.nz), as some people don't even monitor the generic addresses.

127437 2003-03-11 22:25:00 well as i'm deaf, thats the only way i do my enquiries...
and in this case i was asking about some mechaincal problems with a bike...and i emailed one...never heard back so emailed another...and so on.....I also do mention that I am deaf in my emails, to actually make it more purposeful to email them...than having to chase someone down to ring someone for me...

127438 2003-03-11 23:49:00 some buisnesses are email "dumb". ie they have the addy but no idea on how to use it ! also email is very easly forgotten about. nothing like getting the person on the phone to get their attention.

sorry it dosn't help your situation much but just be aware that emails often get ignored :(

127439 2003-03-12 00:33:00 Some businesses/people are just plain slack. I emailed a garage door company the other day about some business and nothing, not a sausage. I suppose the advantage of email is they can be anywhere in the world (assuming you aren't going to follow it up by visiting them). Dolby Digital (160)

What amazes me is that even high tech businesses are sometimes slack at returning emails.

127441 2003-03-12 01:28:00 yeah plain slack..thats all it is..theres no excuse to not checking emails..especially if they advertise email addresses as a contact method...but i'm sure they should know considering emails is becoming one of the main communication methods these days.....but with my case..i'm gonna go chase 3 of them down as 3 of them are local...and 2 arent...so will see what they say when i see them...will let u know what excuses they give me csinclair83 (200)

127443 2003-03-12 10:05:00 Make sure that when you e-mail a business, you never have attachments or never use HTML based e-mail. Most now quarantine such e-mails from unknown sources. Hence you may never get a reply. Quarantine areas are only cleared occasionally (or are deleted).

Try putting a "request for a receipt" setting on the e-mail. Assume OE does that, I use Eudora and that works with a receipt (but then again some companies refuse to respond with automated receipt acknowledgements anyway)

Plain ASCII text, no fancy fonts or formatting.

127444 2003-03-12 21:08:00 Hi Chris

I endorse Godfather's advice 100%, especially the use of plain text emails .

Although not a lot of help to you, unless you ask someone to make the call for you, when I don't get a reply within a reasonable time frame (24-48 hours) I send a couple more over two days and if I still don't get results I phone and ask the receptionist for the Managing director or Sales manager's email address . For international sites I don't phone but try to find other addresses off their web site . Sometimes other departments will answer and tell me the names and addresses I want .

Then I send a polite email (including my phone number) explaining the problem and pointing out what that failing might be doing to their sales . In 90% of cases I get a fast response and guaranteed service if I still want information, and in the other 10% I write them off as hopeless cases . I have had Sales executives phone me from the States to apologise, offering very good deals to sort my problems so persistence and politeness go a long way .

I know it is not the same situation as yours Chris, but bad service is bad service and as an example, one recent series of abysmal cock-ups by a local distributor culminated in my receiving a test instrument at dealer pricing with free freight direct from the US . I saved about US$150 .

I didn't ask for anything but adequate service and standard pricing, but I was stuffed around so much then grossly overcharged for freight after I had specified the freight carrier and they had agreed to use it .

(US$70 for a 700gm parcel sent via UPS under their "equivalent weight" policy where they take the volume of the package and tell you what it weighs according to their schedule, even if it is an empty carton . Be warned, UPS is horrendously expensive for small and light articles that are sent in medium size boxes with airpack or foam packaging . They said this one weighed 3 kg!)

Polite email correspondence to the US Principal produced instant results . If it hadn't, I would have refused to accept delivery from UPS and the (Australian) distributor would have had to either pony up the freight themselves or abandon the shipment .

If nobody complains, nothing changes .

Cheers

Yeah yeah yeah! I know I am picky and persistent to the brink
of being anal, but I have a very long fuse, and (almost) infinite
patience . The results are worth it in the end .
