| 127272 | 2003-03-11 08:16:00 | I am currently searching for a nice firewall for my win2000 pc which acts as an internet gateway (it has a network card connected to a switch, and a dsl modem connected to the net). I run a small home network with about three computers. My problem is this: I want to have control over network access using something like an access control list on similar to what you might have on a router. For instance, I want to have a config file that defines what ports and ip-addresses my proxy server will listen on, what protocols (TCP / UDP) and either allow or deny each packet based on my preferences. I do not care about what applications access the net, so this rules out most common firewalls like ZoneAlarm, Tiny and Sygate… as far as I can tell. Also, I am not after a new piece of hardware such as a router or a linux box that may otherwise do the trick – as I have neither the time, cash or space required. Does anyone know of software for windows 2000 that will do what I am after?? My win2k box is a PII 233 with 32mb of ram which I am considering upgrading at the moment to maybe 64mb. The network card is a standard 100mbit and the dsl modem is a dynalink one for jetstart. Any assistance would be appreciated. markOS X |

| 127275 | 2003-03-11 09:18:00 | the problem is theres not many free firewalls that support ICS. only one i know of at the moment is kerio personl firewall. not sure if you turn the applaction setting off or not. i doubt you will find a firewall that dosn't have applacition control, all good ones have it tho most you can turn it off. some of the early ones didn't have applaction control but most of them are dead. try here (www.wilders.org) for starters. if you really want a good routing firwall setup then install linux. i reccommend you shove as much ram into the old 233 as it can take. with w2k you'll need it. i'm surprised that it will even run with 32mb. 256 would be a whole lot better. |
