127867 2003-03-14 03:07:00 I am really interested to know how everyone types . :-)

When I learnt to type there were only two boys in my class amongst 30-odd girls, unlike in today's computer classes . Because of this I would say that men over the age of, say, around 30 would have taught themselves to type, by one means or another . So . . . . . welcome to my survey! :D

The options are as follows:

1 . How do you type?:

a . "Touch type": typing without looking at the keys at least 80% of the time and using/keeping all fingers on the keyboard .

b . Two finger "touch type": fast use of both index (or other) fingers, able to type without looking at keyboard all of the time (pretty fast) .

c . One or two finger "hunt and peck": index (or other) finger/s hands searching for and pecking at the keys when the correct letter is found (pretty slow) .

2 . How fast do you think you can type?
Words are classified as having five letters, timed over a minute .

a . Under 15 words per minute .
b . 15-25 wpm .
c . 25-35 wpm .
d . 35-45 wpm .
e . 45-55 wpm .
f . 55-65 wpm .
g . Over 65 wpm .

3 . How did you learn to type?

a . At school .
b . Self-taught with a typing program .
c . Just plenty of practice . :D

4 . What is your age group?

a . Under 20
b . 20-29
c . 30-39
d . 40-49
e . 50-59
f . 60 and over

5 . Are you male or female?
With some names it is not always obvious! :p

I will start off:

1 - a
2 - f (used to be g when I was typing all the time)
3 - a
4 - c
5 - female :p

Hopes no one will be too shy/embarrassed to do survey .

127868 2003-03-14 03:13:00 Hmm... If anybody has a URL to some good software that'll tell us all how fast we really can type, then that'd be mint.

Freeware pref.

As for me:
A (Comes in handy when typing in the dark in bed ;-))
f, I can do upto 85 when I have a really fast break at times (Back about a year ago when I had a typing prog that told you how fast you could type)
c, but followed with a typing program to learn to touch-type, as opposed to looking at the keys.
a
Male

Im really keen for some software that'll let me know what I do?

I know in Linux there's a proggy that monitors how far your mouse has gone, wonder if they do that with keys for every-day use?! Or doze for that matter :D

Some freeware program would be nice - that means we can all get the same 'standard' results (amazing what you learn in science about fair testing and what not)

For me:
1 - a
2 - e for the time been - might go up to f or g . . . dunno
3 - c
4 - a
5 - Male

127871 2003-03-14 03:28:00 1 . a

2 . c-d

3 . a,b,c - I kind of leart where the keys were, then leant better for a bit on a typing program . Didn't really start typing all that well until last year when I kind of had to just to get the required words down in time for that assignment . Could've typed slower if I started the assignments earlier though .

4 . a (just)

5 . male (checks)

With my typing I very rarely look down at the keyboard but I've recently discovered that I don't actually type properly . I used a natural keyboard for a couple of days the other week and found out that I've always been typing the 'b' (and sometimes 'g') key with the wrong hand . Was rather hard to get used to .

127872 2003-03-14 03:31:00 1 - A
2 - E
3 - A
4 - A
5 - Male.

I'm not sure exactly how fast I can type, but I think it may be between 45 and 55 wpm.

*Shocked* :O

You pay attention in class CC? ;-) :p

I sometimes hit the B key with my thumb, Other times with my finger . . . Depends on what the rest of my hand is doing at the time . . :-)

127876 2003-03-14 03:58:00 Geez, I did not expect results like this!! :O

You guys really surprise me -- having chatted to some of you on ICQ and in ChatF1 I know you are pretty fast typists but I thought all of you would have learnt touch typing in school at least a couple of years ago, not be self-taught! You must be all honed up with all the practice you get on Press F1, ICQ, MSN, etc etc . :D

> I used a natural keyboard for a couple of days the other week and found out that I've always been typing the 'b' (and sometimes 'g') key with the wrong hand . Was rather hard to get used to .

The left index finger should be used for the 'g' key and I was taught to use the right index finger for the 'b' (and 'h') key, so I find MS Natural keyboards very difficult to use . Would not be fun having to use both types of keyboards, eg natural at work and traditional at home .

> I sometimes hit the B key with my thumb, Other times with my finger . . . Depends on what the rest of my hand is doing at the time . .

And what IS the rest of your hand doing at the time, Chill? :O :D LMAO

> 1 . b - (although i use a thumb too)

Yes, the right thumb is supposed to drive the spacebar . ;-)
